The Henrik Frode Obel Foundation, based in Copenhagen, has announced that the 2026 Obel Award Teaching Fellowship is now open for application. The courses, ideally beginning in 2027, will revolve around the focus of the 2026 Obel Award, System’s Hack: an invitation to critically engage with the systems that underpin contemporary society — from infrastructure and energy to food, water, education, and information.
This fourth edition of the Teaching Fellowships — aimed at supporting the teaching of one or more new courses within an official program at an accredited academic institution — will award one teaching grant of up to €75,000. Joint applications from the prospective fellow and the host institution are due at midnight CEST on 1 August 2025.
The Obel Award Teaching Fellowships reflect the values and vision of the Obel Award, presented annually by the Henrik Frode Obel Foundation to recognize and celebrate architectural projects that foster social and ecological development on a global scale. By supporting the development of new university courses, the Teaching Fellowships aim to help bridge the gap between professional practice and academia, enriching dialogue and learning around the theme selected each year for the award.
For 2026, the initiative focuses on exploring architectural approaches that prioritize long-term resilience, regenerative relationships, and collaboration with natural systems — going beyond conventional problem-solving to intervene in the very mechanisms that generate environmental crises and social inequalities.
