Rimini — the city of vast horizons — seems once again to be questioning the very meaning of hospitality.
Not the bold, sunlit kind that once shone from the iconic posters of the 1960s, but a deeper, more conscious form, born from the need to rethink its heritage and breathe new life into that immense archipelago of hotels that once fueled the golden age of Romagna’s tourism.
As Ennio Flaiano once wrote, "Italy is the land where the future always stops to ask for permission before passing through". And in Rimini, the future seems to have found a home. Here, in the San Giuliano Mare district between the harbor and the Adriatic, rises the MODE Hotel — not simply a building, but a statement of intent. It moves beyond the classic notions of hospitality, embracing a new vision of doing things differently.
Behind this philosophy are thirteen Italian design studios, each invited to interpret the theme of sustainable hospitality. The result is both a hotel and an experimental laboratory, where every room tells a story — spaces where interior design becomes a dialogue between ethics and poetry. The former Hotel Arlesiana thus transforms into a showroom of contemporary hospitality, a living experiment open to professionals, travelers, and design enthusiasts alike.

The exterior and communal areas, designed by Rizoma Architetture, take their title Green is the new black — an ironic yet radical declaration: sustainability is no longer a stylistic choice but the new standard of beauty.
Local ceramics, low-maintenance greenery, photovoltaic panels, and lighting design by Chiara Tabellini (Comfort Hub) create a visual and technical balance where energy efficiency meets elegance.
Light and material interact with subtlety — not to astonish, but to ensure lasting quality over time.
From the lobby to the staircase, Laura Verdi’s concept Stay Cosy in a Second Life expresses both playfulness and purpose — a linguistic twist that becomes an ecological manifesto. Here, ocean plastics become carpets, acoustic felt is made from recycled PET bottles, and tillandsias, small air plants, purify the space like a slow, natural breath.
In the guests’ laundry area, a neon sign reading Mille bolle blu ("A thousand blue bubbles") illuminates an aluminum ceiling that mirrors the surface of water in a shimmering reflection.
On the ground floor, HUB48’s coworking area interprets the theme of collaboration through a double inspiration: GEA – In Wonderland, a fusion between the vitality of the Earth goddess and the dreamlike world of Alice in Wonderland. Two realms converge in an organic design language made of fluid lines, natural materials, and a color palette that replaces predictable greens with water-inspired hues.
MODE Hotel features nine distinct suites, each designed by a different Italian architecture studio — unique in theme and concept, yet united by a shared approach to sustainable design.

Inspired by biophilic design, the Garden Suite by Roberta Studio is an oasis of well-being rooted in nature and the sea. Using eco-sustainable materials and collaborations with B Corp companies, it centers sustainability as the core of the guest experience.
OTTO Studio’s Estate Italiana celebrates the carefree spirit of Riviera summers — a contemporary tribute to Rimini’s culture of hospitality, intertwining memory and design to express social sustainability through craftsmanship and human-centered creativity.
From Rimini to Habana merges the vibrancy of the Romagna Riviera with the warmth of Cuba in a retro 1960s-inspired journey. Bright colors, vintage furniture, and art fuse into a story of creativity and reuse, conceived by students of the Politecnico di Milano’s School of Design.
Onirica, by Eclettico Design (Lombardini22), pays homage to Fellini’s dreamlike imagination, blending sophistication and responsibility in a project where sustainable luxury becomes both poetic and tangible.![Suite Greenside - the ne[s]t © Flavio Ricci, courtesy MODE Hotel](https://www.theplan.it/images/stories/gallery94771/mode-hotelsuite-greenside-3.jpg)
The Greenside Suite, by Paolo Scoglio and Paola Börner (the ne[s]t), reinterprets sustainable hospitality as total architecture, where space, furniture, and light merge into an organic flow inspired by nature and biomimicry — between parametric minimalism and living materials that embody a revolutionary Cgreen within".
Mare 3.0, by GLA Genius Loci Architettura, translates the breath of the sea into circular architecture, transforming discarded materials into design resources and merging sustainability with the genius loci, symbolizing a zero-impact future that gives back to the sea what belongs to it.
The Sensi Suite, by ovre.design®, offers a holistic experience combining environmental sustainability and human well-being, inviting guests to reconnect with themselves through conscious design, recycled materials, and a deep sensory dialogue with nature.
In NOA’s Silenzio Sfrenato, luxury becomes conscious essentiality. By removing the superfluous, the design celebrates craftsmanship, durability, and visual quietness — where true privilege lies in time and environmental respect.
Mini’mor, by Alessia Galimberti, explores minimalism as a form of connection between humans and nature. Delicate tones and essential geometries create harmony, turning design into an ethical act that celebrates reuse and affirms sustainability as a universal and urgent responsibility.

Just as the nearby Demo Hotel did, located only 100 meters away, the MODE Hotel stands as an urban landmark — a proposal for a new kind of Rimini. The city of la dolce vita, cinema, and collective holidays once again becomes a laboratory of the future, choosing not to erase its past but to transform it into a living resource. In the act of restoring an old hotel, there is a message of continuity — almost an act of love toward a history that deserves to be rewritten with care and grace.
In an era where tourism risks being lost among algorithms and flash deals, MODE Hotel restores to hospitality its deepest meaning: caring — for people, for places, for things. And within that vision — at once poetic and pragmatic — lives the enduring spirit of the Rimini that Flaiano might have described as: "A city that has remained light, even after it learned to think".
