Fleurette: A Journey Through Flavours Between Provence and California
By Editorial Staff -

Its very name reveals its spirit: Fleurette, meaning “little flower,” evokes both a tribute and a wish for a life lived in harmony with nature – from sea to land, and, in the case of chef Travis Swikard’s restaurant, from the French Riviera to California. Along the La Jolla coastline in San Diego, Fleurette brings a fresh sense of beauty, energy, and authentic flavour, infused with inspirations from the Mediterranean, Provence, and the Côte d’Azur. This identity is reflected not only in the cuisine, but also in the design of this small gem, distinguished by natural materials, sculptural forms, and refined elegance.

Designed by Studio UNLTD, the restaurant immediately presents itself as a sophisticated contemporary space, defined by carefully selected tones, materials, and surfaces, as well as intimate atmospheres. Contributing to this ambiance are the slightly vintage-inspired wood panelling reminiscent of classic yachts, terrazzo flooring in soft coastal hues, and velvet seating.

The dining room, open to the city through expansive glazing, welcomes guests with its soft, enveloping forms, visible both in the seating and throughout the surfaces. A striking example is the ceiling, whose gentle curves recall wind-swept ocean waves, enhanced by a luminous installation above. At the heart of the space – alongside the open kitchen, designed to create both visual and physical proximity to the chef and his craft – stands an elliptical travertine-clad bar positioned directly beside the kitchen.

Its colours evoke natural landscapes, much like the tones chosen for the seating, inlays, and decorative details: ocean-hued stone, copper accents, and rust-red stools conjure images of seaside cliffs while introducing a playful warmth. The palette, inspired by maritime tones ranging from deep blue to pale azure, is enlivened with touches of pink and copper.Fleurette, Studio UNLTD © Zack Benson, courtesy of Studio UNLTD

Guest areas are likewise characterised by enveloping, sinuous forms and softly lit, welcoming atmospheres. One private dining room in particular is adorned with botanical wall coverings, walnut tables, and a chandelier featuring floating points of light inspired by jellyfish.

Finally, a glass-walled wine cellar and an outdoor greenhouse complete the Fleurette experience, deepening the connection with nature and the surrounding ocean climate.
