By referencing Milan’s history and pointing to its future, Patricia Urquiola’s interiors for the Marriott Casa Breraexpress the city’s timeless essence and atmosphere. Located in Milan’s Brera district, just a short walk from Teatro alla Scala, the luxury hotel is a reinterpretation of Pietro Lingeri’s original rationalist design. Each of the 101 rooms and 15 suites – including the expansive Milanese Suite – is a design jewel, featuring premium materials, such as walnut, Fior di Pesco marble, leather, and patterned glass, combined with an elegant color palette and custom furnishings. The rooftop bar and restaurant share this meticulous attention to detail and, in addition to premium wines and dining, offer panoramic views across the city.

While the exterior of Casa Brera preserves Lingeri’s rationalist minimalism, the interior design interprets Milan’s vitality. Color schemes with striking tones, textural effects, and minimalist elements with a strong personality reflect the city’s multiple identities while paying tribute to Italian creativity. Aesthetic intent, design, and attention to detail occupy a measured balance with technology, innovation, and sustainability, uniting the past, present, and future of Milanese hospitality.Casa Brera Milano © Andrea Brandino, courtesy of dormakaba

In this project, dormakaba played a central role by supplying high-security access-control systems that were integrated seamlessly into the interior design. For the guest rooms and fitness center, the design team selected compact Quantum Pixel electronic locks, with access controlled by electronic credentials, paired with handles designed by Patricia Urquiola. To manage guest flows, improve service quality, and streamline operations, card readers were installed in the elevators. The interior doors were also a focus, with the design team fitting them with concealed door closers that ensure smooth movement and clean lines.

The result is a highly functional yet visually discreet technological ecosystem that serves as an integral part of the project’s design language. According to the company, “For dormakaba, Casa Brera was a model of collaboration between the design, architecture, and systems engineering teams. It was a project in which technology supports the interiors, rather than taking center stage, to create a modern hospitality offering focused on comfort, security, and the guest experience.”
