Bellman Hotel: A Wilhelminian-style Five-star Aparthotel

Located in Berlin’s vibrant Neukölln borough, the Bellman Hotel stands out for its innovative design and strong visual identity. Designed by Tchoban Voss Architekten, this seven-story complex is a model of how a building can be carefully integrated into its urban setting while offering guests a distinctive experience.

Architecture that responds to context

Alternating aluminum and bronze-gold cladding on the hotel’s façade immediately captures the attention of passersby and guests. As the compact, street-facing building rounds the intersection of Karl-Marx-Strasse and Grenzallee, it forms a striking presence. The design team carefully calculated the building’s heights, lines, and depths to engage with the surrounding Wilhelminian-style buildings and create a dialogue between past and present.

The staggered setbacks at the building’s corners match the heights of the area’s traditional cornices, interrupting the otherwise uniform street-front rhythm and adding visual variety. The upper floors project slightly beyond the Karl-Marx-Strasse building line, while the first-floor street frontage is recessed, forming a base that serves as the entrance to the hotel and restaurant.

Hotel Bellman: Design and function

A distinctive element of the project is the dynamic rhythm produced by the different orientations of the ventilated metal façade’s reveals. As the light changes through the day, the shifting appearance contributes to the building’s strong visual identity. Abundant glazing creates bright, comfortable interiors, ideal for guests looking for a relaxed, stylish setting.

Known for creating modern, functional spaces, MonaPort designed the interiors with an emphasis on both comfort and aesthetics. There is also a close focus on accessibility, with three rooms designed for wheelchair users – all compliant with the German DIN standard – and the entire building accessible via elevator. Guests also have access to a fitness area, a restaurant, and two-level underground parking for just under 30 cars, making the hotel a reference point for both luxury and convenience in the heart of Neukölln.
