Can space research help with design on Earth? The aim of the Space Architecture Workshop is precisely that: to learn from space and its technologies to design more sustainable buildings and cities. Curated by the School of Disruption with René Waclavicek and Barbara Imhof (co-founder and partner of LIQUIFER), the event returns this year for its third edition: Designing for Two Worlds. Scheduled for July 15–19 in Milan, the event will bring together experts in architecture, space architecture, and space research for five days.
This year’s workshop is in Italy, after its first edition in Strasbourg and its second in Lugano. Again, its program will include lectures, workshops, and a competition between project teams, with the winner receiving the Lego Prize. Around 30 participants will be selected from at least 15 countries.
Igor Ciminelli, founder and managing director of the School of Disruption, shares a vision that is both ambitious and practical: “We look to Space as a resource and inspiration for its technological and knowledge transfer opportunities. The workshop is the strongest expression of our mission: to foster innovation and creativity through the fusion of skills, backgrounds, and cultures, giving voice to a new generation of Space Workers. This year, we’ve chosen a stunning venue in Milan and an unrivaled panel of experts”.
Among the participants are several NASA contractors, ESA project directors, and university professors and researchers. Together, they combine experience in space research and exploration with the multidisciplinary approach needed to transfer those skills to architecture, city design, and urban planning in the interests of more sustainable development with less environmental impact.
Other key panelists include René Waclavicek and space architecture pioneer Barbara Imhof, whose decades of experience include a stint at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. Other participants include Advenit Makaya, advanced manufacturing engineer at the European Space Agency; Daniel Schubert, deputy head of department at the German Aerospace Center; Miranda Fateri, professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at Aalen University; Brent Sherwood, former senior vice-president of Blue Origin; Maria Antonietta Perino, director of international network opportunities at Thales Alenia Space; Adolfo Suarez, partner and director of L22 Retail by Lombardini22; and Carlotta Zucchini, co-founder of THE PLAN.
