Developed by Egger in collaboration with Häfele, The Moving Tree is a new project by architect Todor Petkov. The result of an innovative coming together of micro and circular living, both important trends right now, the design is based on a big, inhabitable tree trunk. A small space that seems to have been hollowed out inside a tree, this tiny home projects a deep feeling of comfort and welcome, even at first glance. Nature and architecture are in close dialogue, in constant balance, with the boundaries between the two almost imperceptible.
On show at the Egger Forum in St. Johann, Austria, The Moving Tree was conceived as a hospitality module. It exemplifies how a design inspired by the enveloping forms of nature, but reinterpreted through an innovative lens, can integrate with the outdoor environment and provide a peaceful and high-tech refuge for taking a break from the frenzy of everyday life. The architect approached the challenge posed by the small size and rounded shapes with a highly fluid organization of spaces, modular furnishings, and sustainable high-tech surfaces.
Every element draws its inspiration from forests. The outer shell is a prime example, with its bark finish achieved using Egger DecoWall, an effect that is printed digitally directly onto smooth panels. And this continues inside, with the floors, walls, and ceilings all featuring a natural oak finish. Meanwhile, the kitchen is distinguished by a combination of tones centered on eucalyptus green, a color that evokes a close bond with nature. Each room has its own identity, created by different colors and surfaces, ranging from crystal marble to light Baronia oak and light gray Candela marble.
Sustainability is a common thread that unites every element of the project. The timber used in Eurodekor laminated chipboard panels, for example, is 76% sourced from the circular economy and 24% from post-consumer recycling.
The project challenges us to genuinely rethink modern living.
