Milan Design Week, the most important week of the year for the world of design, has begun. On Tuesday, June 7, the Salone del Mobile – a landmark exhibition for the international design, contract, and furniture sectors – is opening its doors at the Rho Fiera complex. Meanwhile, Fuorisalone, a program of parallel events held outside the exhibition center, got underway on Monday, June 6, bringing the streets of Milan to life with a string of events held throughout the city.
After 2020’s show was canceled due to Covid and 2021’s event was scaled down, Salone del Mobile is back this year in Milan in all its glory. Staged June 6–12 at Rho Fiera, this year’s event occupies the entire exhibition complex, representing a total area of 2.153 million square feet (200,000 m2), with over two thousand exhibitors, 25 percent of whom are from outside Italy. The overarching focus of this major event, now taking place for the 60th time, is sustainability, as epitomized by the installation Design with Nature, created with Mario Cucinella and dedicated to ecological transition and circular economy.
Opening the event, a concert took place on Sunday evening at La Scala with the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, conducted by Maestro Lorenzo Viotti, and a ballet featuring principal dancer étoile Roberto Bolle. The inauguration will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, with the participation of Giancarlo Giorgetti, Italian minister of economic development; Elena Bonetti, Italian minister for equal opportunity and the family; Giuseppe Sala, mayor of Milan; Attilio Fontana, governor of Lombardy; Luca Palermo, CEO of Fiera Milano; Enrico Pazzali, president of Fondazione Fiera; Maria Porro, president of Salone del Mobile.Milano; Claudio Feltrin, president of FederlegnoArredo.

As always, a series of parallel exhibitions will be held alongside the main event, including Salone Internazionale del Complemento d’Arredo (furnishing accessories) and Workplace3.0. There are also the regular biennial events EuroCucina (the kitchen), which incorporates FTK: Technology For the Kitchen (built-in appliances), and the Salone Internazionale del Bagno (the bathroom). This year will also see the return of S.Project, a space that takes a cross-sectoral look at design that debuted in 2019, and SaloneSatellite, an event intended to connect companies and young designers, which this year will occupy Pavilions 1–3 and include 600 talented designers, all aged under 35. Pavilions 9–11 and 22–24 will host two themed ADI (Association for Industrial Design) events, both linked to the biennials: DESIGNin the Kitchen and DESIGNin the Bathroom, both curated by Alessandro Colombo with Paola Garbuglio.
Design with Nature, in Pavilion 15, will be the setting for the numerous talk sessions scheduled for Salone del Mobile, while the sessions held under the umbrella of SaloneSatellite will take place in Pavilion 3. The sessions will also be streamed live on the Salone’s digital platform.
Entry to Salone del Mobile is subject to payment and registration. Tickets, which are non-transferable, are only available online. Industry professionals – including architects, designers, buyers, distributors, retailers, exporters, importers, and general contractors – can visit the event on June 7–12, between 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The show is also open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, June 11–12, with the same opening hours.
The theme of 2022’s Fuorisalone is Between Space and Time. This year, Milan Design Week includes just under 800 events organized by over 100 businesses throughout the city, in particular in the design districts of Durini, Brera, Tortona, 5Vie, Isola, and Bovisa. With the support of Studiolabo, the promoter of the Milano Design Network project, the streets of the Lombard capital will be even more lively than usual for a week. Showrooms, stores, and public spaces will host exhibitions, talks, celebrations, installations, and a string of other initiatives, many of which will see businesses launching their latest products. Among this year’s new features is the Fuorisalone Award, which will acknowledge the most significant exhibits and installations at Milan Design Week.
