More than a narrative of Italy and the heritage of its design masters, Casa Italia is a contemporary diplomatic headquarters in the heart of London. Located near Buckingham Palace in the heart of Westminster, the five-story Victorian building was transformed into a diplomatic hub in October 2025. Designed by Nick Vinson, the complex consolidates the Italian Embassy, the Italian Cultural Institute, and the Italian Trade Agency, combining institutional functions with a showcase of the nation’s creative and architectural legacy. This hub serves as a daily meeting point for diplomats, institutional representatives, academics, cultural leaders, and international stakeholders. To convey the Italian spirit, the design emphasizes welcoming, light-filled environments and meticulous detailing, balancing formal rigor with esthetic sensibility.

A handpicked selection of Italian companies and artisans brought the project to life. Alpi – a specialist in decorative composite wood surfaces – made a key contribution to the interiors, defining the material character of the rooms, common areas, and private offices. Vinson selected Alpi Santos for the project, a veneer with contemporary looks from the Legacy collection, curated by art director Piero Lissoni. Applied to wall panels, doors, and shelving, the veneer makes wood a common thread throughout the interiors. This material uniformity ensures a cohesive esthetic across the various spaces, most notably in the ambassador’s office. Wood is therefore an essential element of the project, anchoring the interior design in a broader Italian identity.

The Legacy collection takes its inspiration from increasingly difficult-to-source wood species, such as ebony, Honduras mahogany, teak, and rosewood. In the Casa Italia project, Alpi Santos reinterprets the expressive power of rosewood in a sustainable, high-performance material.
