After the success of its first edition, the second Cortina Design Weekend took place July 12–14. Organized by the Cortina for Us association in collaboration with the Municipality of Cortina d’Ampezzo and its partners, the event focused on culture, architecture, design, and discussion about this mountain location and the contemporary world.
Against the exclusive backdrop of Cortina’s Grand Hotel Savoia, the event included a series of discussions dedicated to design. The program also featured guided tours of local construction sites and the delightful former ENI Village in Borca di Cadore to delve deeper into the issues at hand and live the design experience. A series of parallel events, including installations around the town and tours of local showrooms, antique stores, and shops specializing in products for the home, added to the weekend’s activities, as did the test drives offered by Audi, main partner of Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The theme of this year’s edition, suggested by Dolomiti Contemporanee, was Formazione. Variously translating as “training,” “formation,” “development,” and so on in English, this Italian word has multiple layers of meaning.
Formazione means to give form to, to turn an idea into reality, to create something. But the term is also used in geology to describe the formation of a natural environment and its landscape, in which nature and humans interact. Formazione also refers to education, developing personal skills, and the transmission of culture and knowledge.
In other words, formazione is a multilayered concept that can be harnessed for promoting synergy and collaboration – a method of networking, a way of connecting strands of thought, and of connecting with the landscape, including its human and natural histories.
Friday, July 12, began with Cortina Smart Road, the first Living Lab developed as part of the DOLOMITI INNOVATION VALLEY program.
The afternoon’s work comprised in-depth studies of architecture and the mountains, with an instalment of the Dialogues series, presented by Dolomiti Contemporanee, entitled “Landscapes of Design (Formation Environments)” and the conference presented by THE PLAN, the event’s media partner, “Sports Infrastructure: Architecture, Technology, and Mobility for Experiencing the Mountains in Summer and Winter.”
Saturday’s program was busy, including a conference organized by Lombardini22, “Let’s Turn Words into Action!”, followed by visits to Era Group Immobiliare’s headquarters, the site of a redevelopment project, and a restored typical Ampezzo home dating from 1500.
The event wound up on Sunday with a visit to the former ENI Village, designed by Edoardo Gellner in collaboration with Enrico Mattei, to provide an in-depth analysis of the Progettoborca initiative.
