How can lighting design improve residential, commercial, and hospitality projects? Lighting technology and products will take centerstage at LiGHT Expo, an international event organized by [d]arc media to take place at the Business Design Center in Islington, London, on Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 November 2023.

The event includes a busy program of panel discussions and round table sessions where architects, designers, and lighting experts will share their experiences with the lighting design of various large and small spaces, focusing in particular on the issues of circularity and sustainability.

LiGHT23 will also see the biggest brands in the sector showcasing their latest products. A few names include Artemide, Bega, Delta Light, Erco, Linea Light, Panzeri, Simes, and Zumtobel Group.

What not to miss at LiGHT23

The headline speaker of the two-day London event will be Peruvian-born American Grimanesa Amorós, an artist who’s established an international reputation for her large-scale lighting installations inspired by the cultural heritage of Peru. In Amorós’ multimedia sculptures, technology meets art, and architecture merges with history, creating immersive environments. On November 21 at 11:30 a.m., Amorós will be keynote speaker of “Illuminating Boundaries,” when she’ll explore the theme of creating art with light.

At 3:35 p.m. on the same day, the talk “Shining a Light on the National Portrait Gallery” will take place and will see exhibition designer Pippa Nissen and lighting designer Zerlina Hughes discussing the refurbishment of the art gallery. Located near Trafalgar Square, the National Portrait Gallery reopened in June this year after three years of work that saw the entire building overhauled by Jamie Fobert Architects and the historic collection of artworks expanded.

Then, at 3:55 p.m., lighting designer Nicola Agresta from Foster + Partners will present his multidisciplinary and collaborative installation Inner Peace, which was created at Somerset House last June for the London Design Biennale. The installation saw Agresta collaborating with Amelia Peng, an MA Textiles student at the Royal College of Art, and musicians from the Royal College of Music. The work combined interactive textiles and musical performances to create an engaging event in which visitors’ feelings and emotions directed the visual effects.

On Wednesday afternoon at 3:25 p.m., designer and engineer Moritz Waldemeyer will be speaker at “The Animated Light.” German by birth and British by adoption, Waldemeyer challenges traditional notions of art, and invites visitors to contemplate the profound beauty that exists in the interaction between light, movement, and creativity.

At 3:45 p.m., “Evoking Luxury with Lighting” will see Sandra Brookes of Lighting Design International examine the importance of creating the right atmosphere that will entice hotel guests to stay in a facility and encourage them to return.

Some of the other notable speakers who’ll be participating are Matteo Bianchi, Nick Hickson from THDP, Simon Kincaid from Conran & Partners, Tony Matters from Faber Design, and John Williams from Space Invader.

On Wednesday 22 at 11:30 a.m., the British Institute of Interior Design will host the panel discussion “Designing for Small and Large Spaces Supported by the BIID,” which will examine the use of light and luminaires from an interior designer’s point of view. Then, at 1:30 p.m., the Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP) is returning with the How to Be Brilliant, an event aimed at student and novice designers. Another event dedicated to young people is the Young Lighter competition, organized by the Society of Light and Lighting (SLL). This year’s finalists will be announced on Tuesday 21 beginning at 5:45 p.m.
