The Fondazione Torino Musei, in collaboration with the City of Turin, Italy, and the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, with the support of the Fondazione per l’Architettura / Torino, invites architects and designers to participate in the international competition for the redevelopment and enhancement of GAM – Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, the oldest civic museum of modern art in Italy. The objective is to strengthen its role and significance on the national and international cultural scene.
With a budget of approximately €27.5 million, of which up to €18 million is allocated for construction, the competition invites participants to envision a renewed GAM—one that respects its 20th-century heritage while embracing an environmentally sustainable future. The focus is on a philological restoration of the building, preserving its original features while integrating innovative solutions to create an accessible public space that blends into the urban fabric and offers a stimulating, technologically advanced visitor experience, with the museum’s artistic heritage remaining central.
The call for proposals, published in the Official Journal of the European Union and on the Bologna Architects’ Portal, aims to recapture the avant-garde spirit that marked the founding of GAM, enhancing its collections and exhibition paths under the direction of the new curator, Chiara Bertola. Historical and art-historical research will intertwine with cutting-edge technologies, transforming the museum into a dynamic and open space, capable of engaging with the public through new forms of communication and interaction.
The competition involves an open pre-selection phase, based on résumés and qualifications, to select the five best proposals. These will then be further developed in the final stage through anonymous submissions. The winner will receive a prize of €100,000, along with an advance on the design fees for the subsequent phases of the project. The second to fifth place finalists will receive varying expense reimbursements.
Applications must be submitted by June 5, 2025. The selection of the finalists will be announced by July 18, and the deadline for submitting the technical and economic feasibility projects is set for October 16, 2025. The winner will be announced on November 27, 2025.
With this initiative, the City of Turin is committed to bridging past and future, history and innovation, transforming GAM into a symbol of sustainability, research, and openness—a landmark for contemporary art and culture.
