How can microalgae help us re-imagine the building envelope?

THE PLAN JOURNAL SPRING 2022 OPEN ISSUE

How can microalgae help us re-imagine the building envelope?
By Editorial Staff -

We present some tremendous research in the Tectonics section of TPJ

Daekwon Park’s book review entitled “Microalgae Building Enclosures: Design and Engineering Principles,” reveals that the author of the compelling book with the same title, Kyoung Hee Kim, utilizes architecture case studies and engineering research data to support her call for additional investigations for the promising, young field of microalgae building envelope research.

Finally, we share information about how artificial intelligence (AI) has the ability to predict a wide-range of items from effective energy generation to equipment failure prevention including microalgae systems in the recently released, Artificial Intelligence for Renewable Energy Systems (2022).

Microscopic Microalgae Matters

In “Microalgae Building Enclosures: Design and Engineering Principles,” the book review author Daekwon Park points out that

“Dr. Kim, an architect, building façade specialist, and STEM researcher, is among the leading experts in microalgae research. Her primary target is the built environment, ranging from furniture and interior space to architecture and urban infrastructure. The multi-faceted and broad experience of the author provides a unique perspective and contribution to this field of research.”

The text’s timely topics are an encouraging use of interdisciplinary research. Park, Undergraduate Chair and an Associate Professor at Syracuse University School of Architecture and Faculty Research Fellow and Director of the MATR LAB (Material Archi-Tectonic Research Laboratory) at the Syracuse Center of Excellence, provides an in-depth critique of Dr. Kim’s visionary work that is well worth investigating.

Amazing AI Advancements

In the Kindle Edition of Artificial Intelligence for Renewable Energy Systems (Woodhead Publishing Series in Energy) the editors Ashutosh Kumar Dubey, Sushil Narang, Arun Lal Srivastav, Abhishek Kumar and Vincent García-Díaz look at performance prediction and system modeling. In chapter 8 – Recent Advances in the Production of Renewable Biofuels Using Microalgae, the co-editors consider the wide-range of possible uses for microalgae particularly with building service systems. This resource and THE PLAN Journal’s Spring 2022 Open Issue are informative and must-reads for anyone interested in ground-breaking research that opens up new ways in which forward-thinkers can tackle today’s sustainability challenges!

Why support + read TPJ?

The Plan Journal is intended to disseminate and promote innovative, thought-provoking, and relevant research, studies, and criticism related to architecture and urbanism. The journal grew out of an awareness that academia is all too often engaged in research that’s disconnected from the real-world challenges that face different professions, and that research is only possible for a small number of professional organizations, and, even then, with limited platforms for its dissemination. The overarching aim of TPJ is therefore to enrich the dialogue between researchers and professionals so as to foster both pertinent new knowledge and intellectually driven modes of practice.

How does it work + why does it matter?

Prospective contributors are encouraged to submit proposals or complete manuscripts to the Editor-in-Chief. Subject to positive feedback, proposals can then be developed into complete manuscripts and submitted for review, using the dedicated portal on the TPJ website.

After preliminary approval, manuscripts will be forwarded to suitably qualified people for commenting. TPJ is committed to following a rigorous double-blind peer review process using at least two reviewers. The Editor-in-Chief may also occasionally invite recognized academics, critics, or professionals (including members of the editorial board) to contribute to the journal without going through the peer review process, if warranted by the author’s reputation.
