Underground spaces, with a certain aura of magic, are true catalysts for a reflective and introspective thinking, a potential recognized especially in the past. Desiring to recover and enhance such a space in an innovative and contemporary way, AMDL Circle designed the renovation and reconversion project for the fourth location of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group in the Gallerie d’Italia in Turin’s Palazzo Turinetti. With this project, the architects succeeded in transforming the basement and rooms once associated with banking into a space open to the public, dedicated to photography and video art. These large spaces devoted to culture are accessed by crossing the interior courtyard and descending a monumental staircase to the lobby, illuminated by natural zenithal lighting thanks to a skylight. Above the underground spaces hosting the exhibitions in Palazzo Turinetti are the vaulted gallery under the portico of Piazza San Carlo and the main floor overlooking the piazza, amid decoration, stucco and mirrors.
Here, in this agora of encounters between people and eras, the studio of Michele De Lucchi was flanked by Erreci Architecture, the division of Erreci Sicurezza that designs, realizes and installs designer steel doors and windows with very high thermal insulation properties.
For this project, it was able to actualize its vision and philosophy in the realization and installation of numerous doors and windows of various types. In the center of the main courtyard, for example, there is a porthole that one can walk upon, as to connect the external area with the internal one. At the base of the grand staircase, a compass was inserted to accompany visitors to the underground area. Finally, to enhance the selection of paintings, sculptures, tapestries and furniture from the 14th to 18th centuries on the main floor of the palace, Erreci worked on a large window with arched lunettes.
Every detail of the Gallerie d’Italia in Turin is therefore an invitation to enter and help keep the past alive through an utterly contemporary project, idea, concept and design.
