We’re presenting the second in a series of two events dedicated to women in contemporary architecture, curated by Arianna Callocchia for the Province of Milan’s Fondazione dell’Ordine degli Architetti P.P.C.
The second event will take place at 6:00–8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2020. Presented as webinars and via Facebook Live, the two conferences are moderated by Maria Vittoria Capitanucci (architectural historian at Politecnico di Milano) and represent an opportunity for an in-depth analysis of the importance of the role of women in the world of architecture. This is a chance for listening, comparison, discussion, and professional exchange between different countries.
At the first conference, The Contribution of Women to Contemporary Architecture: the Swiss Example, Stephanie Bender from 2b architects, Lausanne, and Anne-France Aguet, an architect from Mendrisio, outlined how female sensitivity brings added value to contemporary architecture in the Swiss context.
The second conference, The Contribution of Women to Contemporary Architecture: the Finnish Example, will examine the most recent projects by two Finnish architects: Riina Palva (member of SAFA) from Verstas Architects Ltd., Helsinki, and Selina Anttinen (member of SAFA) from AOA Anttinen Oiva Architects Ltd., Helsinki. Using their contemporary architecture projects as the starting point, the conference will examine environmental sustainability, technological innovation, building redevelopment, and the relationship with the historical, cultural, and urban context in which we live.
Riina Palva will discuss the design genesis of the Väre Building at Aalto University’s Otaniemi campus in Espoo, Finland, which was built near the main building, designed by Alvar and Elissa Aalto in 1960.
Selina Anttinen will then outline a new project for a sustainable city in Helsinki called Wood City. The masterplan will include houses, hotels, and offices with parking spaces, as well as a new (carbon neutral) timber construction, Katajanokan Laituri in Helsinki.
Marialisa Santi, councilor of the Ordine degli Architetti P.P.C. from the Province of Milan, and Pia Rantala-Engberg, the Finish ambassador to Italy, will present the welcome address. The event is organized with ATL – The Association of Finnish Architects’ Offices under the sponsorship of the Finnish Embassy in Italy, SAFA – Finnish Association of Architects, Archinfo Finland – Architecture Information Center Finland, the Province of Milan’s Ordine Architetti PPC, and CNAPPC Consiglio Nazionale Architetti PPC, with the contribution of Garofoli SpA.
The Finnish speakers will present their contributions in English.
