ACTIVE SURFACES, ceramics that fight Coronavirus | THE PLAN

Iris Ceramica Group has participated in the project

When we think of one of the noblest materials in nature that people have been using since the dawn of time, we cannot skip ceramics. Its beauty and intrinsic technical features make it one among the most valid materials, to be found in disparate sectors requiring high performances.

Iris Ceramica Group, who in 2009 already put forward a cutting-edge technology capable of making ceramics eco-active, has achieved another important milestone in terms of R&D of international scientific value. High-performing ceramic surfaces ACTIVE SURFACESTM have indeed been the subject of a major research carried out Iris Ceramica Group's Active Research and Development Department in collaboration with the authoritative technical and scientific committees of the University of Milan’s Department of Biomedical, Surgical and Dental Sciences and the Department of Biomedical Sciences for Health of the University of Milan to verify their antiviral properties against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

After only 4 hours of exposure to low intensity UV light, ACTIVE SURFACESTM was able to eliminate 94% of the virus, a significant result that follows the ISO Certificates (ISO 21702 - ISO 18061) already obtained in respect of four well-known viral strains. These surfaces boast ISO Certifications in the antibacterial field and become “active” thanks to a photocatalytic process using titanium dioxide with added silver, thus eliminating pollutants and microbial agents. They are furthermore self-cleaning and do not smell. ACTIVE SURFACESTM is an evolution of a material, creating surfaces that are unique, characterized by innovation and aesthetics but also profoundly valuable as materials that serve the needs of human beings, while fully respecting and protecting the environment.
