This book tells about opportunities for research: three scenes defined by theories and projects developed within the Iuav research unit Dismissed areas and landscape rehabilitation. Projects and essays were brought together for the purposes of this publication: that is, they did not arise together but rather are the result of separate occasions. In retrospect, we realized that the issues of disuse, of humble areas and landscapes, and of renewal and sustainability (the projects) depend on definitions of common good, of beauty, of needs that must be updated not so much with new techniques and technology but rather with a reborn ethical value of our making (the theoretical essays). ?The sudden transformations that are sweeping the world of economics, politics, and communication produce deep changes in the evaluation systems (and hence in the values) that are also closely related to our disciplinary culture. New skills are required, and simultaneously, there is regret for knowledge and skills that were forgotten and too quickly abandoned.?
