Open space design: managing urban complexity is the result of an interdisciplinary research experience conducted by the authors in the fields of technological- environmental design and multi-scalar parametric modeling. The thematic chapters develop topics from the suggestions provided by the discussion with DREISEITLconsulting regarding the strategic role of open spaces and related infrastructures in urban regeneration processes. Starting from the idea of open spaces as an enriched system, the book addresses their potential in densely built environments as urban technological devices capable of providing mainly ecosystem services for more resilient cities. To achieve this goal, particular attention is paid to the contribution of multifunctional systems managed according to the principles of “design for water conservation” to improve the ecological-environmental quality of the urban context. The complexity of such transformative interventions suggests different approaches based also on parametric modeling forms that can orient and verify all the steps of the design processes.

Rossella Franchino, engineer, PhD, is Associate Professor at Vanvitelli University. Her research activities are related to environmental design and construction systems for sustainable architecture. She mainly deals with the reading and controlling of the quality and characteristics of the environment, with the verification of the degradation phenomena determined by anthropic activities. The identification of the intervention tools and strategies for recovery, redevelopment and protection of the environment is an additional field of study.

Caterina Frettoloso, architect, PhD, is Associate Professor at Vanvitelli University. Her research activities are related to the qualification of settlement and environmental systems, focusing on reusing urban open spaces and redeveloping sensitive contexts (archaeological areas and degraded landscapes). She is developing research on “connectivity” applied to urban open space networks and the “circular” approach to the built environment for more resilient cities.

Nicola Pisacane, architect, PhD, is Associate Professor at Vanvitelli University. His research activities are related to geographic, architecture and heritage parametric and information modeling; GIS, BIM and H-BIM applications; multi-scalar 3D acquisition systems and data processing finalized to the construction of digital twin; environmental survey and representation focused on landscape quality analysis through digital mapping; geometric and parametric modeling applied to industrial design.
