This book deals with the topics of regeneration and adaptive re-use of small historic centres, gathering together and organising the results of the student competition "Rethink Premana beyond past and future" organised by the Lecco Campus of the Politecnico di Milano and the involvement of the Premana Town Council and the PREMAX Consortium.The main topic of the competition is the urban and building regeneration and renewal of Premana's historic centre with the aim of improving the urban environment and economic development of Premana and strengthening the rural tourism facilities and services.?? The book is organised in four sections. The first part consists of papers that help to explain the pedagogic value of the competition and the role of study programmes in Building Engineering-Architecture and Architectural Engineering in the Lecco district, based on innovative educational tools involving the local context. The second part introduces a general disciplinary framework on regeneration planning for small historic centres. In particular, this part presents the principles for developing a strategic urban vision for the renovation of historic centres, methods and strategies for building restoration and finally project management methods and principles for the identification of new functions able to revitalise small urban centres.The third part presents the different aspects of the local context of Premana in relation to the goals of the competition. The contributions highlight the requirements as expressed by the local community, the didactic process which led to the definition of the competition brief, and a summary of the proposals regarding the urban strategies and new urban functions. Finally, the fourth section presents the results of the competition through a collection of drawings, graphics and images of all the proposals.?

Laura Elisabetta Malighetti (1972), architetto, è dottoranda di ricerca in Ingegneria ergotecnica edile presso il Dipartimento dei sistemi edilizi e territoriali del Politecnico di Milano. Si occupadella definizione di strategie e strumenti per il recupero funzionale -spaziale e tecnologico dell'edilizia residenziale, partecipando anche alla ricerca del Laboratorio di sperimentazione dell'architettura 2 del Dipartimento di disegno industriale e di tecnologia dell'architettura dello stesso Ateneo. Svolge attività seminariale presso i corsi di laurea in Architettura e in Ingegneria Edile-Architettura. Collabora con la rivista Spazio e Società.
