BRIEF INTRODUCTION Analysing and understanding the historic envi- ronment gives us the possibility to deeply grasp the inseparable relations between form, struc- ture, and material, which gives historic buildings a unique character and defines architectural identity. But evaluating these historic structures with an intuitive approach can lead to the under- valuation of certain issues, which may be in fact very important in terms of cultural significance. Therefore, grasping their real architectural qual- ity needs a critical and active engagement with them. This book aims to develop a framework to analyse historic buildings with a systematic and contin- uous approach starting from urban scale to interior scale focusing on different aspects of space. The use of such a framework aims to structure the analysis of the historic environment with a concentric approach on human experience and it targets to feed the design process of adaptive reuse. Through the framework, various buildings from Italy and Turkey will be analysed in order demonstrate different steps of the method. Historic buildings are very complex structures with different layers of significance. Moreover interventions on these buildings introduce new spatial elements and materials that can be regarded as new layers of adaptation. In order to differentiate these layers and consider them in authentic hierarchy, systematic analysis is the most prevailing tool of the architect.
