An urban hub that balances retail, dining, and high-end housing recently opened in the Al Safa neighborhood in downtown Dubai. The H Residence, designed by award-winning practice tkdp, replaces a 1980s retail structure with a vibrant hub for the local community built on a human-scale.
The complex stands out for the way its primary elements – a large public plaza, two arched wings, white façades with vertical sun-shading fins, and a suspended panoramic walkway – dynamically interact to form a coherent, harmonious whole. At the center, a 1,800-sq. m public plaza acts as both the visual and social epicenter around which the different functions are arranged: townhouses, each with a front garden and a larger rear garden with direct access to the plaza; smaller apartments with deep balconies; and restaurants overlooking the plaza that breathe life into the street-level floor. The architects took advantage of the site’s topography to inform their design strategy both esthetically and functionally, with the sloping land allowing additional levels at the back of the building, providing privacy for the first floor residences, and improving overall circulation and accessibility. The change in height also provided the clearance required to accommodate the suspended bridge connecting the two wings. Reserved for residents, this 30-m walkway includes a 300-sq. m infinity pool with views of the plaza and the city skyline.
From the retail area, with its international brands, to the high-end restaurants and 37 luxury residential units, the complex integrates with the local community, giving the neighborhood a vibrant new urban landmark.
