A new entrance to one of downtown Tehran’s major metro stations has given the city a vibrant urban hub that prioritizes pedestrian
well-being – a long-neglected aspect in the city. The historic center of the capital expanded rapidly after the Iranian Revolution. Without a unified planning approach, however, not all stakeholders were taken into account. Also, a focus on car-centric mobility produced a dense, congested urban fabric marked by an extensive road network and dwindling public spaces.
This design, by Mohammad Khavarian of KA architecture studio, is part of the Meydangah initiative and the broader Tehran Pedestrian City plan. Both aim to reverse this over-40-year trend by creating a series of urban spaces to gradually return the city to pedestrians.
Located on one of the capital’s most important intersections, the metro entrance occupies a triangular site that was previously cluttered with underperforming infrastructure and disused areas. Its design grew out of the idea of protection – from the noise and sight of heavy traffic, from sun and rain – taking the form of a modular roof of interlaced vaults built with handmade bricks. The result is a sheltered, usable space that remains permeable to light and air while serving as a natural extension of the pedestrian plaza with its local vendors. Lending a formal coherence and identity to the structure, a series of geometric arches functionally and visually connect the site’s different levels.
By creating a place for people to pause and interact, rather than simply rush through, the project has produced a new urban landmark that addresses the needs of all residents.
