A forward-thinking timber construction designed to the highest technology and sustainability standards and serving as a living laboratory where some 3,400 environmentally-committed architecture students will learn their trade. This was the brief Toronto’s George Brown College drew up for Limberlost Place, its new School of Architectural Technology. The client’s vision has been realized by Moriyama Teshima Architects in joint venture with Acton Ostry Architects, winners of the international competition hosted by the College.
Such was the avant-garde nature of the project that it required the development of new structural solutions, which in turn pioneered new regulatory standards for Ontario, like the approval of timber buildings up to 18 stories high, passed by the authorities only in 2024. The project also led the way with its carefully sequenced prefabrication program, and unprecedented collaborative procedures that engaged a broad range of designers and consultants.

Located close to the shores of Lake Ontario, the 10-story Limberlost Place houses executive offices, lecture rooms, a fitness center, a childcare center and a top-floor event space with panoramic views. One of the world’s first public buildings constructed from engineered wood, entirely sourced in Quebec, the project takes its name from the Limberlost Reserve, a huge forest reserve in Huntsville, Ontario.
