Judging by the opening words in the book’s introduction, Lina Ghotmeh’s research for Windows of Light, Zumtobel Group’s 2023/2024 Artistic Annual Report, is deeply rooted in the origins of the cosmos.
In this publication, the Franco-Lebanese designer examines light as both a physical phenomenon and a social connector, exploring its effects across the realms of the natural, astronomical, cultural, and social. In a narrative of words, photographs, and drawings spanning generations yet eschewing chronological order, the author explores ways in which “architecture can challenge conventional uses of light, opening up new possibilities for spatial and social equity”.

What role does the relationship between light and darkness play in your architectural research?
Light and darkness shape how we perceive and understand the space around us. In my architectural practice, they serve as essential tools for shaping human presence, emotions, and history. It is not just about lighting up a room or casting shadows; it is about orchestrating an experience where spaces come alive through light and absence. Much like how an archeologist uncovers historical layers, an architect digs into the layers of a site’s material and memory, revealing how light can act as a catalyst for human connection and dialogue.
