A firm resolve lies behind this project by Measured Architecture, winner last year of numerous awards both on global public platforms dedicated to architecture, and from critics, especially in the firm’s own country, Canada; a resolve that is clearly manifest in the name that architect Clinton Cuddington chose when, in 2007, after years working with major Canadian firms, including Bing Thom Architects, he opened his own practice in Vancouver, since 2014 jointly managed with architect Piers Cunnington. As is often the case, there is more to a name than first meets the eye. For, while it is eminently true that architecture is measurement and the representation of scalar quantities, it is equally true that the term “architecture” can also signify a project’s relationship with its context: how it measures up to and resonates with that context. This entails a constant interplay between the mathematical and the contextual measure, but when the designer succeeds in finding just the right balance, a miracle occurs and technical prowess melds with esthetics. The number of awards and accolades bestowed on this British Columbia firm bears witness to the extent to which this balance has been achieved. Shor House is a new milestone in that process, not least because it is Cuddington’s own home, built to his own design principles, but also because it implements highly topical professional and ethical values hailed throughout northern America.

Shor House falls into the category of the “vacation home”, which, in Canada, often carries greater prestige than one’s permanent home and where, especially, cost and volume are not a concern. This particular vacation home is on Mayne Island, part of the archipelago running along the southern end of Vancouver Island, between the Strait of Georgia and the Navy Channel, and given its proximity to Vancouver, a sought-after bolt hole for city dwellers.
