In Coyoacán, a historic neighborhood of Mexico City with a bohemian soul, deeply connected to the art world and known for being the home of Frida Kahlo, a private residence has been transformed by AMASA Estudio into a sophisticated studio-laboratory for visual artist Daniela Riquelme. The project was born out of the need to create a more suitable environment for artistic production, optimizing space and enhancing natural light.
The intervention completely redefined the upper floor of the house, which had already been used by the artist as a studio and workshop for painting and jewelry making but was limited in size and lighting quality. The new design reorganized the space around a pre-existing spiral staircase, which has now become the central distribution element of the different studio areas.
The main workspace opens onto a terrace surrounded by the lush green treetops of Coyoacán. Next to the studio, a more secluded area includes a bathroom and a custom wooden bookshelf designed to store materials, books, and work tools. In the rear portion of the building—expanded beyond its original configuration—is the area dedicated to material handling, equipped with a sturdy workbench and a sink.
A skylight sits above the passageway next to the staircase, flooding the upper floor with light. Thanks to a grated platform, it also filters light down to the lower levels, creating a luminous and dynamic atmosphere.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the project is the use of color. The wrought iron of the windows and structural elements features a vibrant shade of red, which is also applied to the staircase. This choice emphasizes the artisanal character of the studio and establishes a chromatic connection between the architectural space and the artist’s works.
Complementing the color palette, large white plaster surfaces and custom wooden furniture bring warmth to the artist’s environment.
The large openings and the shed-style roof system optimize the conditions for painting, maximizing natural light and creating a bright and inspiring space.
