Mapei has added its experience and products to the Olympic Games in London, running from 27 July to 12 August 2012, through its involvement in numerous construction projects. This includes the Olympic Stadium designed by the sports facilities specialists Populous. This venue will host the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the athletics events for the main games and Paralympics. This stadium, along with all Olympic construction, has been built using the notion of “reduce, reuse, recycle” and includes change rooms, medical centres and meeting and prayer rooms for athletes. It was also designed to be restructured following the Olympics, reducing the capacity from 80,000 to 25,000. The foundation was made with reused, crushed concrete and the main structure used a low-carbon concrete (created in the factory using a low CO2 emission process). An effort was also made to minimise the use of steel in the structure, while the grey energy was cut by 40% (i.e. the amount of energy needed for manufacturing, transport and disposal of materials). Mapei was specifically involved in the construction by supplying the adhesives for laying the athletics track. Mondotrack FTX created the synthetic rubber base for the track and this was glued using Adesilex G19, ensuring toughness, elasticity and an ability to withstand water, dampness, heat and other weather conditions. Adesilex G19 provides a high degree of adhesion for nearly all materials and it can help earn 2 LEED points.
