Nest, a refuge that embraces the forest

Immersed in the Utah landscape, this residence transcends the idea of a mountain home to become a sanctuary designed for wellbeing and contemplative retreat

Nestled among eight acres of aspen trees in Park City, Utah, the Nest residence, designed by Sparano + Mooney Architecture for a couple and their family, is the perfect synthesis of discreet luxury and the aspiration for a “buen retiro.”

The strength of the project lies in its philosophy. The clients, who wanted a peaceful retreat and future retirement home, asked the designers to combine the recreational opportunities of a renowned ski resort with a sense of deep tranquility and privacy. Inspiration was drawn from “forest bathing” (or shinrin-yoku), the Japanese practice of consciously immersing oneself in the forest atmosphere to regain calm and presence.

Sparano + Mooney Architecture embraced this philosophy not only in the design but through the design itself. Rather than dominating the landscape, the house gently adapts to it, weaving gracefully through the existing aspen forest. The
thermally-modified ReSawn Timber radiata pine and the measured use of exposed concrete create a tactile dialogue between the lightness of the woods and the solid permanence of the structure, establishing a visual connection with the surroundings.

The spatial layout of the 762 m² residence reflects the duality between hospitality and private sanctuary. While the shared spaces — three guest bedrooms, a billiard-library room, and a lower-level living area with kitchenette — are designed to welcome numerous visitors, the true heart of the retreat lies in the master suite, deliberately set apart from the main areas.

Attention to detail is evident in the choice of refined materials: interiors dominated by natural oak, Venetian plaster walls, and custom metalwork (burnished stainless steel and blackened steel) that embellish the entryway. Functionality is equally considered: as a ski-in/ski-out property, it includes a dedicated equipment room, and even the pets have their own washing area in concrete and metal — highlighting a holistic approach to mountain living.Nest - Sparano + Mooney Architecture © Joe Fletcher, courtesy Sparano + Mooney Architecture

Beyond aesthetics, Nest stands as a model of intelligent sustainability. Incorporating the principles of passive design, it maximizes natural light through skylights and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that open the interiors toward the glade. Spray-foam insulation, radiant floor heating, and high-performance glazing ensure minimal energy consumption, honoring the surrounding landscape even through its ecological footprint.

Nest thus becomes a true nest protective and serene set within the majestic natural beauty of Utah.
