This retreat overlooking the sea on Martha’s Vineyard, off the south coast of Cape Cod and just three hours from Boston, was designed to be the ideal place for holiday and weekend getaways with family and friends. The interior designer of the 3200 sq.ft. (300 m2) residence, on the island where Steven Spielberg filmed Jaws, was Mika Durrell, founder of Able Moraine. Her clients, a tech executive and a philanthropist, are parents of twin girls who’ve now left home for college. This change of life emptied out the family nest and opened it to new possibilities.
Nestled on a cliff in the residential area of Katama near the Chappaquiddick ferry, the house is on the outskirts of Edgartown, a former whaling port and now a charming tourist destination. Surrounded by open land, the home is accessed via a driveway that leads to a covered patio.
Built on two open-plan levels, the house has four bedrooms, with the master and three ensuite bedrooms on the upper floor. The kitchen, dining room, and spacious living area are surrounded by large windows with panoramic views of the harbor. A laundry, play area, and home theater complete the interior. Outside are covered verandas, a barbecue area, and a porch with a fireplace.
A natural and comfortable paradise, according Mika Durrell, who says that with this project “we wanted to create a home with an elegant but natural style, preserving both comfort and functionality.” This balance was achieved in the shingle-style home by a modern design that layers different timbers and brushed, smooth, matt, and gloss surfaces. All these elements come together in interiors that are flooded with striking views of the surrounding landscape.
The designer introduced a tonal richness and textural density into the project, preserving a sense of relaxing intimacy through natural, reclaimed, and organic elements, which give depth to a palette of cognac, leather, rustic timber, chestnut, copper, natural stone, and warm creams.
The recycled materials are reminiscent of a patina left by the passing of time, giving the home a lived-in feel. This atmosphere is then underscored by the floors, exposed beams, custom-made furnishings, leather handrails, and copper fireplace. Centering on a careful balance between the rustic and modern, artisan-made elements help create a style that reflects the owners’ tastes.
