There is a particular kind of ambition that resists spectacle. The Georgian Bay Beach House. with interiors designed by Andrea Pierre, belongs to this quieter tradition, one that measures success not in gestures but in the quality of what endures.

Conceived as a year-round family residence on the Georgian Bay shoreline,in Ontario,  the 350 m² project replaces a cherished but ageing cottage with a home designed to last for generations, shaped as much by memory as by material intelligence.Georgian Bay Beach House - &Pierre © Riley Snelling, courtesy &Pierre

The client's brief was rooted in continuity, as the project has been conceived not by erasing the spirit of what came before but by reinterpreting it, translating the intimacy and informality of the Canadian cottage vernacular into a contemporary architectural language.

The architectural design is by Diamond Schmitt Architects and Gio Tassone Architects, while the interior design was carried out by Andrea Pierre—since 2023 head of the Toronto-based studio &Pierre—who oversaw the project in her role as Director of Design at Westgrove, the studio she co-founded previously with Keri Maclellan.

The house establishes a direct and continuous relationship with its surroundings. Positioned along the water's edge, it draws from the textures and tones of sand, stone, and shifting light, not as stylistic references, but as structural principles that shape every spatial decision.

Expansive glazing frames panoramic views of the bay, dissolving the boundaries between interior and exterior while allowing daylight to articulate experience throughout the day. The clear and carefully proportioned architectural composition echoes the horizontality of the shoreline, embedding the building within its context rather than asserting dominance over it. refined material palette reinforces the project’s connection to place. White oak, locally sourced limestone, plaster, and linen establish a neutral base enriched by subtle coastal hues. These materials are employed not as decorative elements, but they shape the atmosphere by softening light, absorbing sound, and enhancing the tactile quality of the interiors.

The result is a layered environment that feels both contemporary and timeless, where natural finishes age gracefully and contribute to the evolving character of the home.

Living Across Generations

Organised across three levels, the house prioritises clarity of circulation and adaptability of use. The planning is attentive to long-term livability, embedding principles of accessibility and ageing in place without sacrificing the shapes.

"We wanted the home to honour the memory of the original cottage, while creating something enduring, refined, and deeply connected to its setting", says Andrea Pierre. The sentiment is evident in every room, as the design becomes an act of stewardship, attentive to what was and careful about what remains.
