In the historic center of Ansião, a town in central Portugal, Casa Verde Gago is an elegant renovation that merges memory and renewal.
Designed by Bruno Dias Arquitectura, the project focuses on preserving local identity by maintaining a balance between past and present through an architectural language that respectfully reinterprets the past through a contemporary lens.
The name “Casa Verde Gago” derives from combining the name of the street where the building is located with the color of the façade. Green, an important color in traditional Portuguese residential architecture, bridges historical memory and contemporary aesthetics, naturally integrating the building into its urban context.
Casa Verde Gago spans two levels. At ground level are two two-room apartments, each comprising a bedroom, open kitchen and living area, and bathroom. Upstairs are an office and walk-in closet.
Timber stairs connect the two levels, reflecting the interior organization, creating a sense of continuity between the spaces, and adding a touch of warmth.
Timber is the main building material, forming the centerpiece of both the structure and the interiors. A material with a central role in the local building tradition, it covers most surfaces, alternating with white plaster walls. Timber is also used for the doors and kitchen cabinetry, enhancing the intimate, welcoming atmosphere.
Concrete flooring provides a gentle contrast to the light tones of the wood and complements the overall color palette. Forest green curtains and veined marble tiles in the bathrooms introduce further material and chromatic accents.
A central element of the renovation is the creation of a patio. Previously a cellar, it has been transformed into an outdoor space for entertaining guests, complete with a water feature and garden beds. The minimalist design accentuates the fusion of architecture and nature, making the patio a tranquil oasis in the heart of Ansião.
