In the vibrant core of Midtown Manhattan, a private apartment design stands out for its ability to blend the spirit of Britain’s 1960s Mod culture with a futuristic allure.
Situated in the prestigious Museum Tower on West 53rd Street, this forward-thinking project by Hines Collective - New York based firm led by Devin Hines - transforms into a minimalist canvas, drawing inspiration from a gallery-like ambiance.
Originally designed with a traditional aesthetic, the apartment underwent a complete renovation to align with the modern tastes of its owners, collectors of Mod vintage furniture and contemporary art.
The transformation resulted in a pure, almost ethereal environment, featuring a gloss white epoxy resin floor that, with a single pour, creates a seamless, luminous surface reminiscent of a cloudscape.
The apartment’s minimalist approach is further emphasized through ingenious solutions such as hidden flush doors and conceal numerous closet spaces, including a walk-in closet created by converting a bedroom. The light-tone palette highlights carefully curated artwork and design pieces. Reflective materials and polished finishes were chosen to enhance the natural light, making the space feel even brighter and more expansive.
Despite the predominant use of white, small punches of bold colour and mod prints from the 1960s add character to the spaces without overwhelming them visually. The arrangement of the furnishings is thoughtfully designed to highlight the owners' art collection and the breathtaking views from Museum Tower, establishing a seamless connection between the interior design and the external panorama.
The result is a space that masterfully merges functionality and beauty, paying homage to the nearby MoMA and the owners’ passion for abstract 60s design.
