Albert Hotel, a Reframed Legacy

The adaptive reuse project in Fredericksburg brings to life a contemporary retreat rooted in 175 years of Texas Hill Country history and in the vision of architect Albert Keidel

The new Albert Hotel in Fredericksburg, a Reframed Legacy
By Editorial Staff -

In the town of Fredericksburg, Texas, the Albert Hotel presents itself as both a continuation and a reinterpretation of 175 years of Hill Country history. The boutique hotel pays tribute to Albert Keidel, the architect and historic preservationist who played a key role in shaping the architectural and cultural identity of Fredericksburg. Designed by Clayton Korte in collaboration with New Waterloo and Melanie Raines for the interiors, the adaptive reuse project combines architectural preservation and contemporary design with a refined sense of balance.Albert Hotel - Clayton Korte in collaborazione con New Waterloo © Daniel Chase, courtesy Clayton Korte

Central to the project is the decision to preserve the complex’s traditional streetscape, positioning the new building discreetly behind the historic façade. The result is a spatial sequence that transitions from civic familiarity to contemplative retreat, an architectural gesture that honours the town’s past while shaping its future.

"Designing in a historic context – notes Paul Clayton, Principal at Clayton Korte means embracing the layers of time - respecting the past while shaping the future".

The one-hectar development includes 105 guest rooms ranging from a mix of bunkrooms and suites to a private house. Custom-designed furniture and tailored amenities establish a domestic yet refined atmosphere, reflecting the softer side of Albert Keidel’s global sensibilities.Albert Hotel - Clayton Korte in collaborazione con New Waterloo © Daniel Chase, courtesy Clayton Korte

The material palette draws directly from the Texas Hill Country. Traditional wood siding is paired with a custom raked stucco finish that captures the changing light throughout the day. Deep roof overhangs mitigate the intensity of the summer sun, extending shaded thresholds and reinforcing the building’s environmental responsiveness.Albert Hotel - Clayton Korte in collaborazione con New Waterloo © Daniel Chase, courtesy Clayton Korte

The hotel’s ambition to become a regional destination is supported by on site amenities such as three restaurants, two bars, a private dining room, an event space of over 300 sq. m with mezzanine deck, and a two-acre landscape anchored by a sunken limestone pool. A full-service spa and fitness centre further defines the property as a place of respite.Albert Hotel - Clayton Korte in collaborazione con New Waterloo © Ray Castro, courtesy Clayton Korte

The landscape has been designed by Word + Carr Design Group
and integrates native grasses, oaks, and mesquites, stitching together historic structures and new volumes through meandering paths and reclaimed materials sourced on site. The outdoor spaces temper the architecture, embedding it within the ecological and cultural fabric of the Hill Country.Albert Hotel - Clayton Korte in collaborazione con New Waterloo © Daniel Chase, courtesy Clayton Korte

The Albert Hotel positions hospitality as an act able to preserve memory while cultivating new narratives. In doing so, it contributes a measured, sophisticated presence to Fredericksburg’s evolving architectural landscape.
