In the approved Waterfront project of Piombino, the goal was to create a space that connects the historic center with the port area. All interventions aim to enhance the livability of the spaces and ensure environmental sustainability. In particular, for the Maritime Station, the objective is to give the complex a new identity, making it more efficient and functional through the reorganization of the outdoor space, the redevelopment of access points, and pathways. The idea is to create a "promenade architecturale," with open and covered spaces, featuring an external cladding that extends both vertically and horizontally.

The complex is seamlessly integrated into its surroundings and was designed based on a study of the coastal area's natural heritage. The natural elements that characterize it are reflected in the pilot tower, which is entirely clad in ceramic screens, designed according to four models of project allegory. The shapes are inspired by the sea, featuring a wave pattern; the city, with a design that echoes the historic center of Piombino; the port, with a pattern inspired by the dock basin; and the arches, recalling the original shapes of the Batteria pier. The pier design also aims to extend the visual effect of the natural coastline over the two breakwaters, creating a semi-transparent backdrop that follows the development of the infrastructure while softening its visual impact.
The project won first prize in the Energy Landscape category of the City'scape Award for its sustainability features. In the pier design, reducing energy consumption—and thus enhancing sustainability—is a key priority. This is reflected in the creation of over a thousand vertical conical tubular elements of varying heights, evoking a stylized and artificial representation of a "tree trunk or reed." At their base, circular elements function as photovoltaic panels. For the pilot tower, the project includes the installation of a solar photovoltaic system with a capacity of at least 14 kWp.
The guiding principle behind the evolution of the new port complex project has been: "To create a place that truly connects Piombino's historic center with the port area." With the new interventions in the Waterfront project—focused on landscape mitigation for the breakwater piers, the new pilot tower, and the redevelopment of the maritime station—the port expands and enhances its range of services. This is driven by the belief that Piombino can further develop its vocation and potential in this sector, establishing itself as a key hub and service point for the Tuscan Archipelago. The key strengths of the project are:
The idea is to create a chameleonic architecture that adapts and integrates seamlessly into its surroundings, following the flexible adaptation system of a chameleon. This approach enables the development of an evolved architectural language, capable of absorbing the complexities of the place, its culture, and contemporary dynamics.
