Villa Laura at the foot of Mount Guncina, a renewed architectural identity that blends nature and resilience

The idea of giving the building a new architectural dimension stems from a dramatic event: in 2013, a huge boulder of about 20 m³ detached from the slopes of Mount Guncina and rolled downhill, eventually coming to a stop in the gardens of Villa Laura, embedding itself in the second-floor slab. By sheer luck, there were no casualties; the area was subsequently cleared and secured. The project thus originates from this event which, once exorcised, takes on a new, positive meaning: the fallen boulder becomes a precious stone, giving new form to the building.

The building is located at the foot of Mount Guncina, from which the 2013 rockfall occurred. The idea of evoking the image of the massive fallen stone becomes a unique opportunity to gently integrate the building into the surrounding natural landscape. Grazing light softly touches the irregularly inclined surfaces of the stone-colored metal cladding, blending the structure seamlessly into the rocky backdrop.

Aluminum is one of the few materials that combine excellent workability, strength, and exceptional weather resistance, making it highly suitable for various architectural and industrial applications. Even in its natural state, without any anodizing or painting treatments, aluminum naturally passivates by forming a thin, protective surface oxide layer. This layer effectively shields the metal from progressive corrosion, ensuring durability and longevity even under harsh environmental conditions such as rain, humidity, and exposure to pollutants.

The project strongly focused on sustainability and eco-compatibility throughout its design and material selection. The thermal insulation component was made of breathable mineral fiber, with a double crossed framework in fir wood acting as spacers to enhance structural stability. All materials used are C.A.M. certified – meeting the Minimum Environmental Criteria according to the Italian Ministry for Ecological Transition (M.I.T.E.) Decree of June 23, 2022, ensuring high environmental standards and energy efficiency.

With this project, the building loses the traditional overhangs typical of the previous pitched roof but still maintains effective protection of the facades thanks to an innovative system. The walls are no longer vertical but inclined downward, gradually tapering, which improves both aesthetics and functionality. The large cavity created acts as a ventilated facade, ensuring natural ventilation that helps prevent moisture and condensation issues. At the top of this cavity, recessed gutters are installed to reduce visual impact, along with hidden downspouts integrated within the structure to maintain a clean and orderly appearance. The gutters feature an overflow system and a secondary collection profile that activates if the primary drainage system becomes blocked or damaged. This ensures that even in case of malfunction, rainwater is properly managed, preventing infiltration or damage to the underlying structures. Should water pass through the external aluminum cladding, it is collected above the windows and directed in a controlled manner to the ground, thereby providing effective and long-lasting protection to the building over time.
