The project envisions a workspace that not only embodies the values and needs of an innovative pharmaceutical company, but also promotes the mental and physical well-being of its people. By integrating natural elements, maximising daylight, and adopting curved and fluid forms, the work environment becomes a catalyst for creativity, concentration, and team interaction. The office transforms into a laboratory of the future, where efficiency and quality of life meet.
The concept is rooted in the desire to create “soft” and enveloping spaces that, with their embrace, can convey users a sense of harmony and calm, simply by being in them. A fluid, dynamic architecture integrates the concept of “well-being”.

We designed naturally lit comfortable and flexible workspaces where greenery and relaxation areas alternate with operative zones. This environment fosters a culture of wellness and productivity, enhancing staff motivation and efficiency, with a positive impact on business performance. The inner courtyard, especially its view from the basement level, played a key role in inspiring the overall concept. Curved, organic, flowing forms enhance energy, reduce visual rigidity, and define areas dedicated to relaxation, break, and fitness. Circulation paths are enriched with artworks—paintings, sculptures, and objects—that narrate the story and passion behind the company.

The project was conceived with economic and environmental sustainability in mind. As a fit out of spaces already equipped with mechanical system, the goal was to maintain as much as possible the existing arrangement, while improving its overall energy performance. To mask the exposed systems, we introduce a suspended “lattice” of triangular, sound-absorbing ceiling panels inspired by the geometric motif of the Alfasigma logo. This open system conceals the technical elements while improving the acoustic comfort of the working environments, giving a decorative, strong identifying character to the working spaces.

The project pays special attention to the concepts of brightness, flexibility and livability, dedicating careful attention to the use of color. The revised layout maximizes energy efficiency, and the creation of comfortable spaces, making the offices a new benchmark for the company and its workers. The main design criteria include: Enhancement of Interior Spaces: —thanks to a proper interaction of indoor and outdoor environments and the use of “greenery,” the work spaces stimulate concentration and creativity.

  • Flexibility and Daylight of interior spaces: The office is designed to adapt to the different needs of its users. Workstations are strategically oriented to maximise exposure to natural light, creating a brighter and more stimulating atmosphere. Each zone above the external light source is equipped of an artificial light source that intervenes, balancing changes throughout the day.
  • Green Harmony: Balance between people and nature is not treated just only as a theoretical principle, but a reality, contributing to tangible improvements in working life and productivity.
  • The project aims to be a model of how architecture, design and sustainability can converge to create spaces that not only support work, but also promote the well-being and health of the people within them

Bio

Icona Architetti Associati is an architecture and design studio founded in Milan in 2013 by the duo Marco Orto and Federica Poggio. Heirs to the modern lesson of the Italian masters of the 20th century and aware of the suggestions of the contemporary, Icona claims an immersive and humanistic approach to design. Their work always originates from a dialogue: human and sensory, with people and contexts. Icona embraces a wide range of operational scales, from master plan to product design, thanks to a vast network of collaborators. Materials are given a central role: this is the idea of “Icona Touch,” a multisensory concept in which optical and haptic come together in a single experience. The axiom of fluidity is also part of Icona’s fundamentals. The ability to modulate space according to seasons and functions is the method used to create flexible eco-systems. Fluidity that, together with the curved line, symbolizes the true signature of Icona Associated Architects.
