The idea was born from the 2021 Masterplan Dolo Disvelata, which recognized the Fondamenta as a neglected yet historically significant area. The Municipal Administration commissioned the project to restore this canal-facing space as Dolo’s true urban front and “Water Gateway.” The concept developed through an integrated approach that respects the site’s memory—such as the red brick quay wall—while reimagining the space for contemporary civic life. The design blends tradition and innovation, envisioning a multi-functional landscape that encourages social interaction, cultural activities, and accessibility, making the area a central node of urban regeneration.

The project is fully integrated into Dolo’s historical and urban context. It enhances the canal’s southern bank, currently undervalued, restoring its centrality as a civic and visual axis. The elevated square, scenic staircase, and new footbridge form seamless connections between Isola Bassa, the waterfront, and the surrounding pedestrian paths. Historic elements—such as the quay wall and traditional visual corridors—are preserved and highlighted, while new interventions are designed to be reversible and lightweight. The area becomes a public stage for daily life, events, and tourism, blending urban vitality with the canal’s natural beauty.
Sustainability guided every design decision. A green roof garden over the parking area improves insulation, absorbs rainwater, and provides habitat for urban fauna. The use of native trees and plants—including weeping willows along the canal—enhances biodiversity and cooling. Stormwater is collected through an integrated system for reuse or safe discharge. Materials were selected for low environmental impact and high solar reflectance to reduce heat absorption. The open-air parking design ensures natural ventilation and lighting, cutting emissions. Together, these measures enhance climate resilience, restore ecosystem functions, and promote long-term environmental well-being.
The project focuses on redeveloping the southern riverfront of Dolo, from Ponte dei Cavalli to the former slaughterhouse, transforming it into the city's "Water Gateway." Currently used as a public parking area, the space will be reimagined as a multifunctional urban terrace reconnecting the historic center with the Brenta Canal. A new open-air, covered parking facility will be built below street level, preserving parking capacity while freeing the surface for public use. On top, a green elevated square will offer walkways, seating, and vegetation to mitigate heat, absorb rainwater, and improve biodiversity. Key connections will be ensured through ramps, bridges, and a scenic fan-shaped staircase that enhances views and ventilation. A new commercial space for tourism services will be integrated, while a new wooden footbridge will replace the existing one, reinforcing connectivity. Via Fondamenta will be widened and made safer, transformed into a one-way road with restricted access, new signage, and green edges. An InfoPark system will display real-time parking availability. Historic features, like the red brick quay wall, will be restored and lit to enhance its value. The project incorporates climate-resilient strategies such as stormwater systems, native tree replanting, and eco-friendly materials. Blending history, ecology, and urban functionality, the intervention aims to create a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive public space for Dolo.
The project reimagines Dolo’s southern canal front as a vibrant, inclusive public space. It celebrates water and people as core elements of the town’s identity, balancing historical preservation with sustainable urban design. Prioritizing walkability, ecology, and accessibility, it transforms the area into a green, multifunctional gateway. This revitalization enhances Dolo’s livability, reconnects it with its heritage, and strengthens its relationship with the canal.
