In regenerating Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano, the vision was to reactivate the basilica’s piazza into an inviting, inclusive and accessible urban square, renewing its sense of purpose and quality. The design was inspired by the ornate 700-year-old Cosmati paving inside the basilica, especially its complex circular geometries. The aim was to extend the richness and energy of this pattern from within the basilica into the square. The project also responds to Rome’s C40 climate goals, addressing urban heat island and stormwater management. Rome’s long history of water innovation, including the historic flooding of Piazza Navona for cooling, inspired the idea of fountains in the square.

Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano

The former square at San Giovanni in Laterano lacked a strong sense of place, especially as the setting for such a significant basilica. This project was therefore a chance to transform it into a vibrant civic space. Water elements reflect and amplify the grandeur of the basilica’s facade and the adjacent Scala Santa, enhancing their urban presence. The water is also an invitation for gatherings, play and interaction, bringing new energy to the square. The redesign removes raised landscape curbs, reducing barriers to improve safety and inclusivity. In doing so, the new square reaffirms its urban role as a key node for large-scale events.

Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano uses durable paving in travertine, basalt and sampietrini, promoting the use of local Roman materials. To reduce the urban heat island effect, the team prioritised light-coloured travertine over the darker basalt or sampietrini typically found in Roman piazzas. Given a clear mandate to avoid trees in the square due to interference with sightlines during the annual Primo Maggio concert, the project instead uses water fountains and mist to create a cooling microclimate within the square. The fountain system is designed in tandem with the square’s drainage system to detain stormwater and reuse it to avoid overburdening Rome’s stormwater system during major rain events.

San Giovanni in Laterano, with the square that opens up at its feet, represents one of the most significant places in Rome. It is a symbolic and spatial node that connects past and present, sacred and urban. This space marks the meeting point between the city's daily life and major public events, the spirituality of faith, and the vitality of urban life. The redevelopment project, designed by One Works and implemented by the Department of Infrastructure and Public Works (DILP) of Rome Capital as part of the Jubilee works for 2025, was created with the aim of giving the city a space capable of welcoming, connecting and celebrating. A square that is contemporary and functional, but at the same time deeply rooted in the history and identity of Rome.
The new square is organised as a system of open-air spaces, where Cosmatesque paving patterns are not just decoration but also serve to structure the functions of the space. These patterns distinguish areas for rest, movement, and social interaction. The paving engages in a dialogue with the surrounding vegetation, harmonising accessibility requirements with goals for environmental sustainability.
The strength of the project lies in its balance between history and the future. It supports the evolving needs of Rome while inviting social engagement. The new square welcomes people of all backgrounds to gather, participate and help shape the future of Rome while celebrating its past.

“The space in front of the oldest Basilica in Rome was almost forgotten, reduced to a crossroads for cars and pedestrians. The transformation is now evident… The new square overlooking the Basilica represents the new face that we intend to give to the city, based on enhancement and livability.” - Ornella Segnalini, Councilor for Public Works
