Sremski Karlovci, located on the right bank of the Danube, is a town with significant architectural-stylistic and cultural-historical value. It is a spatial cultural-historical unit designated as an immovable cultural property of exceptional importance. It served as an important center of cultural, educational, and spiritual life for Serbs in the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the 18th and 19th centuries. The primary objective of this project is to improve the overall quality of life for the local population and to stimulate the town’s tourism potential by creating a more attractive and accessible environment for visitors. This project seeks to balance historical preservation with modern development, ensuring a thriving and sustainable future for both residents and tourists.

The project fosters a dynamic relationship between the urban area and its surrounding landscape by blending ecological and urban renewal. Tree-lined avenues and diverse species will enhance biodiversity, creating green corridors that connect the site to broader ecosystems. This greening strategy improves air quality, mitigates the urban heat island effect, and boosts stormwater management. Revitalizing public spaces, like the market square, with pedestrian zones and bicycle lanes, increases connectivity and accessibility. These changes integrate nature into the urban fabric, enhancing social life and mobility. Overall, the project creates a sustainable, attractive space that links urban and natural elements.
Passive sustainable design measures have been incorporated through the integration of abundant trees and greenery throughout the project. These elements not only improve the aesthetic appeal of the space but also provide essential environmental benefits, such as reducing heat island effects, improving air quality, and enhancing biodiversity. Strategically placed trees offer shade and natural cooling, contributing to energy savings while promoting a healthier, more pleasant environment for the community. In addition, the reconstruction and construction of the infrastructure network will enhance sanitation, reduce pollution risks, and improve overall public health, making the area a more sustainable and livable environment for residents.
Urban transformation and development of the historic city center of Sremski Karlovci consists of four components:
-Landscape design of the historic city center of Sremski Karlovci
-Facade conservation
-Market square
-Reconstruction of the Ešikovački Stream
Landscape design involves comprehensive planning, including the construction and reconstruction of infrastructure systems networks. Additionally, modifications to traffic regimes are planned to improve safety for all users, alongside the integration of hardscape and softscape elements. The design also incorporates lighting and signage to enhance the overall functionality and aesthetics of the area. The project aims to address several issues, including poor infrastructure, deteriorating facades, a lack of greenery, and underdeveloped public areas. One of the main objectives is to modify traffic regimes, introduce pedestrian zones, and revitalize public spaces. As part of this transformation, the market square will be turned into a multifunctional space, hosting markets during the day and concerts and festivals in the evening. New trees will be planted along the streets, and damaged green areas will be revitalized. The lighting design is inspired by traditional street lanterns. The paving will distinguish between pedestrian and vehicular zones using natural stone.
