The idea for the Edge ElbSide project originated from the desire to create a modern work environment that promotes both flexibility and transparency. Deviating from the original master plan, the interior courtyard was opened up and distributed across the building as winter gardens. This innovation came from the concept of creating transitional zones between indoor and outdoor spaces, thus generating a unique microclimate. The open, flexible layouts and the integration of vertical and horizontal communication spaces reflect the modern approach of strengthening the dialogue between users and the surrounding environment.

The dynamic between the Edge ElbSide project and its surrounding area is characterized by a strong connection to the urban landscape. The building is located in the new Elbbrücken district, marking the eastern entrance to HafenCity. This area is currently being developed and features a mix of modern office buildings and public open spaces. Edge ElbSide integrates seamlessly into this emerging urban environment, responding to the urban planning guidelines while simultaneously creating a bridge to the adjacent public spaces with its open and communicative architecture. The building fosters a dialogue between interior and exterior spaces, enhancing its relationship with the surrounding district.
EDGE ElbSide redefines the modern workplace through sustainable design, innovative winter gardens, and a flexible spatial concept. These green buffer zones enhance indoor climate and reduce energy use. The building features passive cooling via chilled ceiling systems, natural ventilation, and modular construction to minimize waste. Materials were chosen for authenticity and energy efficiency, with dynamic façades and solar shading.
Edge ElbSide is a modern office building in Hamburg’s emerging Elbbrücken district, marking HafenCity’s eastern entrance. It promotes a collaborative, flexible work environment, moving away from traditional office layouts. The design fosters interaction and transparency, both inside and with the surrounding urban fabric. The building’s layout revolves around a central "main street," connecting open staircases that facilitate vertical communication across multiple floors. Flexible office spaces replace traditional individual offices, allowing for adaptability and open collaboration. Unlike the original master plan, which proposed a closed courtyard, our design distributes winter gardens throughout the building. These gardens act as transitional spaces between interior and exterior, creating microclimates that enhance both comfort and energy efficiency. The energy concept focuses on sustainability. Winter gardens allow for natural ventilation, reducing energy use by promoting cross-ventilation. The modular design enhances flexibility, ensuring long-term adaptability and high-quality workspaces. Edge ElbSide integrates flexible workspaces and sustainable features, offering a dynamic and innovative office environment that enhances connections with its urban surroundings.
