The project emerged from a desire to reimagine public space by placing the individual and community at the center of urban design. The goal was to foster meaningful interaction through a fluid relationship between tradition, innovation, and environmental consciousness. Selected as the winner of a two-stage competition, the concept evolved around reconnecting fragmented urban areas into a unified, dynamic, and inclusive park. The design promotes shared experiences and restores the area’s role as a social, cultural, and ecological focal point.

The intervention restores continuity within the urban fabric through careful spatial integration. Natural materials like lava stone and terracotta reflect the local identity of the Etna region. The layout follows organic forms, with winding paths and layered transitions that connect upper and lower levels. The transformation of a former traffic-dominated zone into a pedestrian-friendly environment supports slow mobility and enhances access to surrounding services. The new walkway and scenic fountain form a symbolic and functional gateway, knitting together architecture, topography, and community life.

Environmental sustainability guided every design choice. Locally sourced materials like chestnut wood, lava stone, and terracotta reduce transport impact and celebrate regional character. Rainwater harvesting systems serve the irrigation needs of green areas, reducing water consumption and associated energy use. Photovoltaic panels on service roofs ensure energy autonomy, while minimal-impact materials are used throughout. The project was recognized as the winner in a two-stage competition, underlining its quality and alignment with sustainable goals.

The project redefines Villa Aldo Moro as an inclusive, accessible, and ecologically responsible urban landmark. Its strengths lie in the harmony of tradition and innovation, the balance between open public use and contemplative space, and the enhancement of daily urban life through design. Key features include the basalt-inspired fountain—both a sculptural and functional centerpiece—the accessible underground parking connected by elevators and ramps, and the expanded amphitheater and playground zones. The use of water elements, local materials, and renewable technologies exemplifies the project’s holistic and forward-looking nature. Above all, it restores a sense of belonging and identity for the community.
