The design concept originated from the intention to harmonize the new owners’ contemporary lifestyle with the architectural heritage of the original apartment by Luigi Caccia Dominioni. The project focused on preserving and reinterpreting key elements such as original doors, color schemes, and bespoke furnishings, while reorganizing the layout to create more open, functional, and connected living spaces.Through a careful balance of restoration and innovation, the concept evolved by maintaining visual continuity between the entrance and living areas, integrating custom-designed furniture, and combining original materials with new finishes. The result is a respectful yet contemporary reinterpretation that honors the apartment’s historic character while meeting modern needs.

One of the main design objectives was to create greater visual continuity between the large marble entrance hall with fireplace and the adjacent living area, as well as to open up the service rooms to form a generous kitchen-living space with a central island and lounge area. This reconfiguration eliminated the rigid separation between the formal entertaining rooms and the private living quarters, favoring a more fluid and interconnected layout. This project represents a respectful yet contemporary reinterpretation of a Milanese architectural legacy, balancing historical identity with modern living.
The project embraces sustainability through a conscious approach to restoration and reuse. Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, existing architectural elements — such as flooring, built-in furniture, and fixtures — were carefully preserved, restored, or reinterpreted. Natural and durable materials were prioritized, including oak wood, raffia wall coverings, and marble, all selected for their longevity and low environmental impact. The lighting design integrates energy-efficient LED technology, combined with timeless design pieces, some of which were vintage or original to the apartment.
Key architectural elements and color schemes from Caccia Dominioni’s original design were carefully preserved, integrated, and reinterpreted. These include the iconic glass-paneled doors between the entrance and living room in soft grey tones, and the deep red built-in wall elements in the hallway connecting to the dining area. Each room was redesigned to maintain a subtle trace of the original project — whether through the retention of a handle, a color, or the rhythm of a bookshelf or wardrobe. In the studio, original cabinetry was integrated with a B&Bitalia bookshelves , while the master bedroom combines restored wardrobes covered with champagne-toned raffia wallpaper and custom-designed fluted doors in geometric compositions, made from bronzed brass elements .The original "vestiaire" was restored with a new green wall silk fabric and connecting it to a new guest bathroom featuring marble fixtures and patterned wallpaper. Materials were chosen to dialogue with the existing ones: the Italian herringbone oak flooring and the marble of the entrance were carefully restored and paired with new finishes such as resin in the bathrooms and Calacatta Viola marble in the master bath.The lighting design blends architectural fixtures — such as bronze-finished Flos spotlights — with iconic pieces of Italian design and original elements from Caccia Dominioni himself, including the glass chandeliers in the entrance and the "Monachella" wall lights, produced by Azucena.
We wanted a home that felt contemporary and comfortable, but still carried the soul of the original architecture. The studio perfectly interpreted our vision, preserving meaningful details while reimagining the spaces with elegance and functionality. Every room now tells a story — ours, and the one that came before.
AL Alessandra Lemarangi interiors&retail is a Milan-based interior architecture and design studio founded in 2020 by Alessandra Lemarangi, graduated in Architecture from the University of Florence in 2003. Before founding her own studio, she gained extensive experience in Milan, collaborating with renowned architecture firms, including Mario Bellini Architects, and she worked as project manager and partner on various national and international projects.
Over the years, her work has spanned multiple sectors — from architectural façades to high-end retail and yachting interiors, from lighting design to workspace planning. So the studio has a versatile expertise that extends naturally into private residential architecture, where the design spaces from the architectural shell down to custom-made furniture and finishes.
Each project is crafted with a sensitivity to context, function, and atmosphere, ensuring a tailored result.
