The house provides educational programs in science, technology, empowerment, leadership, and sustainable skills. Activities at the center include study assistance for students in 10th to 12th grade in order to improve their matriculation results. Studies are held in small classes, with professional teachers and with personal guidance from counselors. The center also advances informal learning in the town, and it holds social activities increasing community involvement. The house is an interdisciplinary space operating in both formal and informal educational spheres. The project have been established to close the gaps between Israel's center and periphery, and in order to provide equal and fair opportunities for each school student in Israel to have a better future.

North facade

An old and majestic tree in the center of the site for a new educational building that is embracing the existing and regenerating the neighborhood into a welcoming place by taking out the fences. The design layout is fostering the harmonious coexistence between the built and natural environment, allowing pedestrians to view the iconic tree from within and from the outside. By building tribunes/benches instead of fences the design is engaging pupils and elderly people to enjoy an outdoor classroom or a local open-air “parliament” discussion. From an isolated and unreachable spot, It became a regenerated tangible, eye leveled and green place for the benefit of the city citizens promoting learning opportunities for all even in a peripheral part of the country.

Patio with Oak Tree, day time

Several passive design strategies were implemented in the design process, including ventilated facades from recycled materials that can absorb noise and increase energy efficiency and also several green, blue and yellow roofs, including upcycling of waste materials into roof walkways and much more, making even the fifth facade into an innovative experimentation that reduces air pollution and urban heat and enhances nature. The green roofs together with green wall, biophilic design and the Oak patio creates space that enhance the well-being of inhabitants, local birds and bees, adding comfortable microclimate while minimizing the environmental footprint. Cutting edge vertical photovoltaic system is shifting the building into being the first Net Zero public building in the city.

Patio with Oak Tree, night time

Context awareness with no fences and a welcoming auditorium for the people after class hours. The new building offers an educational program for excellence in science, technology and sustainability for peripheral pupils that usually cannot acquire this positive impact far away. Enhancing the existing – an old and majestic tree in the center of the site for the new educational building is embracing the existed and regenerating the neighborhood into a welcoming place by taking out the fences and giving the public space back and sense of belonging. Biophilic design incorporating nature within inner spaces promoting wellness, health and harmony. The green, blue and yellow roofs together with green wall, biophilic design and the Oak patio creates space that enhance the well-being of inhabitants, local birds and bees, adding comfortable microclimate while minimizing the environmental footprint. A simple and effective engineered solution for temporary water retention is designed to help with reducing urban flash floods and heat island. The water retention system (passive blue) is installed directly on the waterproofing layer while providing additional membrane protection as well as improved thermal and acoustic insulation. The system includes several layers for mechanical and physical protection, water retention and optimal drainage based on a unique drainage and retention board. Using resource-efficient materials and reducing waste with a special focus on usage and life-cycle.

Tribunes with no fences, aerial view
Economically feasible building due to multi-functional and adaptable space that can serve pupils and local public at different hours throughout the day. Optimized thermal performance will reduce the maintenance costs significantly thanks to green and blue roofs and ventilated facade. The building is designed to be the first net zero building in the city, using a pioneering PV system that is generating more energy in the morning and the afternoon and by that helping the grid.
