The idea originated from Fudan University’s desire to reflect its historic identity “Heavenly light shines day after day” within a contemporary educational space. The concept was inspired by the interplay between light and knowledge, leading to a design where a large roof-landscape filters natural light into public spaces. The architecture fosters a luminous and dynamic atmosphere, encouraging social interaction and intellectual exchange. Our proposal emerged from an international competition, and was developed through extensive contextual research, reflecting the local urban fabric while introducing an open and interconnected campus model.

The new campus transforms a previously underutilized area into a vibrant urban core. The masterplan introduces a central green spine, connecting academic blocks and extending to the public realm. The western blocks are linked by gardens and bridges, creating permeability and continuous circulation. The eastern edge, housing cultural programs, opens to the city, enhancing accessibility. Urban boulevards and tranquil internal courtyards contrast and complement each other. The integration of water features, tree-lined paths, and a porous built form anchors the campus in its environment, fostering interaction between university life and the broader community.
Sustainability was approached through passive design strategies and efficient energy systems. The roof landscape not only filters light but also improves thermal performance. Natural ventilation and daylighting reduce dependence on artificial systems. Energy Design Cody advised on building systems to optimize energy use. Materials such as wood and local stone were selected for durability and low environmental impact. Water collection and green spaces contribute to microclimate regulation. The project won First Prize in the International Design Competition (2011), recognizing its innovative approach to sustainable, culturally sensitive campus architecture.
The new School of Management at Fudan University is a landmark of educational architecture that integrates learning, culture, and community. The project reflects the poetic motto of the university, “Heavenly light shines day after day” by translating light into a spatial narrative. A continuous roof-landscape acts as both an architectural element and an environmental filter, shading public spaces while creating a visual identity for the campus. Organized vertically, the program distributes public functions such as auditoriums, library, museum, and commercial areas at the lower levels, while classrooms and administrative spaces rise above. Bridges link academic blocks, enabling fluid circulation. The eastern building houses cultural functions and connects to the city, reinforcing the campus’s public dimension. The architecture invites openness: courtyards, skylights, and transparent façades encourage visual and social permeability. The central green boulevard becomes a social spine, integrating nature with academic life. The design’s strength lies in its sensitivity to context, its layering of functions, and its ability to form a cohesive and inspiring academic environment.
We are proud to see the vision for our new campus take shape. This project honors our university’s legacy and supports our goal of becoming a world-class institution. It provides our students, faculty, and visitors with a space that reflects our values light, openness, and excellence. We look forward to its completion and its role in shaping the future of Fudan School of Management.
