EuroSchool Bannerghatta, a school that breathes with the landscape

The core philosophy of the school emerged from recognising the challenges of today's hyper-online age, where children have meagre interaction with the natural environment. The issues the world faces today — of deteriorating resources and the looming threat of the climate crisis demand that young and future generations be conscious of their impact on the world. The concept developed around exploring a viable model for education that liberates children from the confines of closed spaces and ensures their holistic development. It holds immense potential to nurture a lasting connection with nature by reimagining the very spaces where children spend most of their waking hours.

An organic site layout that merges built form with terrain

Framed by the verdant expanse of Bannerghatta National Park, located in the Indian state of Karnataka, the 20,000 sqm school site invites children to roam and discover. Its design capitalises on existing vegetation, making mature trees the anchors of an organically shaped building. The structures line the northern edge that encloses a generous central green spine that unifies all classroom blocks. Here, the original trees penetrate the architecture, sprouting through courtyards between teaching clusters, spilling into activity zones, edging pathways with greenery, and offering a calming backdrop to gathering areas.

Roof cutouts framing sky and light

The design embeds sustainability through innate, pragmatic solutions over add‑on technologies. Deep overhangs and planted pergolas shade outdoor learning nooks, while interconnected courtyards channel prevailing breezes through classrooms to naturally regulate the temperature. North–south orientation eliminates direct solar gain, eliminating unnecessary air‑conditioning, and floor‑to‑ceiling glazing bathes interiors in daylight, cutting energy use. Rooftop runoff feeds a rainwater‑harvesting network, and an on‑site treatment plant recycles greywater, transforming the campus into a zero‑discharge ecosystem. Locally sourced granite floors, recycled‑aggregate GRC fins, low‑carbon concrete blends follow the land’s contours, preserving mature trees and minimising ecological impact.

Trees act as visual and spatial anchors in transition zones

EuroSchool Bannerghatta subverts the typical school model with an organic layout that intertwines built forms and natural landscapes. Pre‑existing trees were meticulously preserved and woven into the design, becoming indispensable anchors of the learning environment—emerging through courtyards between classroom clusters, spilling into activity zones, lining verdant walkways, and offering calming focal points in gathering spaces. At ground level, classrooms and activity halls open directly onto a generous central green spine, fostering a tactile, tectonic link between interior and exterior. Upper floors maintain this dialogue through full‑height glazing, granting uninterrupted views of terraced lawns, seating ledges, play zones, sand pits, and outdoor classrooms nestled within vegetable gardens. A restored natural water channel meanders through the central green, reinforcing the campus’s fluid bond with its site. Inside, nature’s patterns inform every detail: vibrant Fibonacci‑inspired panels, hexagonal “beehive” shelving, crystalline triangular light clusters, and abstract glass overlays all soften the boundary between indoors and out, nurturing children’s holistic connection to the world around them.

A mature tree at the heart of outdoor learning
“The campus is designed to integrate nature-inspired outdoor learning with new-age amenities, creating an environment that nurtures self-discovery and supports over 25% of learning experiences in open, green settings.”
