Tombolo, a bold presence featuring passive environmental devices

The concept emerged from the site's elemental conditions, intense sun, open exposure, and dramatic temperature swings. In response, a series of buttress-like forms were conceived as expressive structural anchors and passive environmental devices. These monolithic elements absorb heat during the day, releasing it at night to stabilize interior temperatures, while their mass and orientation cast deep, sculptural shadows that protect glazed openings and choreograph natural light throughout the day. Rather than dissolving into the landscape, the architecture asserts a bold presence, one that engages the terrain through contrast and rhythm. The design prioritizes emotional resonance, spatial compression and release, and a cinematic procession as deliberate moments of tension and relief.

The architecture asserts a strong formal presence against the rugged landscape, its layered massing and axial organization revealing themselves in procession.

The architecture establishes a bold counterpoint to the open terrain. The forms rise from the ground with intentional weight and rhythm, anchoring the structure with a commanding presence. This stance creates a dialogue with the landscape, an interplay between built form and natural context defined by contrast, not mimicry. The architecture doesn’t dissolve into the view; it frames it. Sightlines are curated, light is modulated, and shadows are cast to shape a layered sensory experience. Movement through the home reveals shifting perspectives, with each aperture and volume crafted to evoke a feeling of protection and openness. The relationship with the landscape is deliberate and expressive, turning spatial thresholds into moments of pause, reflection, or quiet revelation.

An elliptical opening carved into the portico roof captures light and shadow in constant motion, anchoring the entry with sculptural clarity.

The project uses passive strategies such as thermal mass, sun shading, cross ventilation, and a living roof to reduce mechanical loads. Materials were selected for durability and low embodied energy, including regional stone and high-performance glazing. Interior finishes were chosen to age gracefully and require minimal replacement, featuring natural plasters, raw metal, and wood with enduring warmth. The result is a balanced environment where sustainability and sensory richness coexist.

An elliptical oculus carved into the portico roof creates a dramatic interplay of light, shadow, and sky, framing nature as sculpture in the arrival sequence.

This residence is conceived as an architectural statement, expressive, grounded, and emotionally resonant. Rather than disappearing into the site, the structure rises with intent, composed of bold geometries and buttress-like forms that define both the spatial experience and environmental performance. These monolithic elements provide passive thermal regulation and solar shading while casting shifting shadows that animate the interiors throughout the day. Developed from the inside out, the home prioritizes function, flow, and human experience. Spatial sequences are carefully choreographed to compress and release, drawing attention to light, material, and rhythm. Interior and exterior spaces are deliberately distinct, reinforcing the feeling of protection, intimacy, and contrast. Materiality is central to the project’s character. Regional stone, textured plaster, and warm wood surfaces are paired with custom furnishings and patinated metals to create a tactile, layered atmosphere. Finishes are chosen for their ability to age gracefully, contributing to a design language rooted in authenticity and timelessness. The strength of the project lies in its clarity of intent: every element is purposeful, every space a sensory chapter in a larger story. It is architecture as experience, cinematic, immersive, and deeply connected to place.

A sweeping staircase framed by bespoke ironwork ascends alongside a custom mural wall, blending theatricality with classic grandeur.
I wanted something timeless, layered, and personal, not just a house, but an experience. Every space feels intentional, bold yet intimate, elegant yet livable. The design reflects how I live and what I love. I still walk through it in disbelief, it’s not just beautiful, it’s meaningful. The process was seamless, and the result exceeded every expectation. It feels like home in the most unexpected and unforgettable way.
