The idea for the SOFITEL Shanghai North Bund project originated from the desire to transform the former Jiu Long Hotel into a five-star hotel that combines artistry with modern functionality. The new owner envisioned the hotel as a showcase for their company in Shanghai, prompting the design team to approach the project from a broader perspective. They focused on three dimensions: 'street,' 'function,' and 'presentation.' This approach sought to preserve the building’s historical significance while enhancing its services, integrating it into the urban landscape, and creating a refined, flexible guest experience.

The SOFITEL Shanghai North Bund project engages thoughtfully with the surrounding landscape, especially the historic Shajing Port area and the adjacent 1933 Old Millfun. The design harmonizes the hotel's architectural elements with the rough concrete of the mill and integrates it into the evolving urban fabric of North Bund. The hotel’s façade combines light-colored stone and gray metal, creating a seamless transition between old and new. Additionally, the repositioned entrance and sophisticated design enhance its presence, distinguishing it from surrounding high-rise developments while maintaining a dialogue with its historical context.
