The design concept for the Fulgor cinema emerged from the recognition of its historical and social significance to the city of Bologna over the 20th century. The aim was to preserve its memory while adapting the space to contemporary needs. To develop the concept, we adopted five key principles: architecture as a book, to tell the building’s story; acoustic comfort, with a design that integrates materiality; valorization of the existing, preserving the historical and architectural elements; future, to project the cinema into the present context; and lighting, inspired by the historical signage. The project aims to give Fulgor a renewed identity, maintaining a faithful connection to its roots while creating a harmonious dialogue between the past and the future.

The project relates to the surrounding landscape and urban context through a careful dialogue with the city of Bologna, integrating harmoniously into the urban environment. The choice of materials and colors was guided by the desire to create visual continuity with the surroundings, preserving the historical character of the Fulgor cinema while also renewing it to meet contemporary needs. The exterior design, inspired by the historical signage that once surrounded the block, recalls the visual tradition of the area, creating a cohesive aesthetic that blends the old with the new. Architecture thus becomes a bridge between the cinema's historical past and the present urban context, transforming into a public space that contributes to the social and cultural life of the neighborhood.
The Fulgor cinema project stands out for its ability to preserve and enhance the building's historical memory while adapting it to the contemporary urban context. The key strengths of the project are: architecture as a book, which tells the cinema's history through the recovery of original architectural elements; acoustics as form, transforming acoustic comfort into an opportunity to manipulate space and material; and valorization of the existing, removing incongruous additions and restoring the purity of the original form. Another distinctive feature is the integration of the building with Bologna's urban fabric, achieved through a careful choice of materials and colors, as well as a design inspired by the historical signage. The result is a project that bridges the past and future, creating a public space of great cultural and social value.
«[...] it is a project aimed at making our cinemas the home of the public, to offer the viewers of Bologna a unique experience tailored to every taste. In times when the prevailing sentiment is to bring cinema into people's homes, our passion, on the other hand, drives us to take a different approach and make our theaters the homes of the public».
The aim of their multidisciplinary research is to give a shape to the relation between different knowledges creating a continuous dialog among theory and architectural practice. They think about the composition as a dynamic relation between theme and functional program, a relational aesthetic that allows to reveal hidden tools useful to a urban philosophy relevant to the project. They experiment the relationship with the shape connected to the composition’s metaphor. They imagine their work to be part of a endless circle of actions that display itself first of all in a multi-project and then with an architectural vision. They approach the detailed design in a scientific way; through research and development, they work for an ideal quality that can put together the environment with a positive vision of the reality. Their projects have been featured at the Venice Biennale (12th, 15th, 16th, and 19th editions), the London Festival of Architecture, and the Shanghai Expo.
