The Idea behind the project was to conceive the building as a terrace nestled on the slope of the farm that sinks the productive part into the hill. The two-story building is almost completely hidden in the natural slope but visible from the outside towards south-east, overlooking the vineyards and looking towards Basilica of San Luca in Bologna. This last element constitutes the highest level of the structure and contains the reception area, the wine-shop and the tasting room of the cellar. The element that characterizes the winery is a glass walkway suspended over vineyards that is the extension of the tasting room. Symbolically, this extension wants to be the link between the natural part of the farm and the constructed part where the locally cultivated grapes are transformed into wine.

The architecture for the transformation of agricultural products needs to have adequate relations with the facilities it encloses, for this reason it needs spaces that generate large buildings. The insertion of these buildings in an agricultural, natural territory with great landscape values is therefore not a simple and immediate approach. The design choice was to think of a building that for the most part is hidden from view by burying itself in the hillside. While the higher part is left to the view, which is proposed as a terrace overlooking the vineyards. This highlights the value that the winery contributes to assigning to the area, characterising its wine-growing vocation, making an essential contribution to the environmental recovery of 100 hectares of land that had been abandoned.
The farm on which the new wine cellar fits is organic, so it is necessary for the new building to be congruent with the philosophy espoused with the agricultural level.
The decision to design a cellar largely underground is not only aimed at limiting visual impacts but also at limiting the energy needs for its climate control.
Furthermore, the technologies for energy provision are designed with the use of renewable sources: use of biomass produced by the farm, photovoltaic panels, solar collectors.
The gentle, sinuous course of the Bolognese hills, the alternation of vineyards, olive groves and wooded areas, generate an extraordinary ensemble of original beauty. The project takes shape from the relationships between the morphological elements of the farm that must be integrated with them. From a landscape point of view, the idea is the natural consequence of these relationships: the building is largely concealed from view by sinking into the hillside, while only a portion, mostly glazed, juts out onto the slope with a terrace overlooking the vineyards. The underground portion of the project adheres to the necessary technologies of contemporary winemaking methods and does not interact with the land, while the emerging portion of the building establishes a new and unexpected dialogue with the surrounding landscape through the dialectical juxtaposition of the contemporary form and the materials used.
The proposal does not merely respond to a functional need of the farm, but is proposed as an element of the landscape in which it fits. In this way, the project aims to be an expression of responsible, thought-out and conscious architecture that has the will to integrate the productive reality into the territory. Furthermore, the project contributes to the recovery and use of a significant portion of land, while offering a concrete response to energy efficiency issues.
