Headquarters project for the Bet Al Nadja association, inspired by the symbolic form of a house

The idea for the project was born from the urban context of N'djamena in Chad and the desire to anchor the BAN association's headquarters in its immediate environment. The concept is inspired by the symbolic form of the "Bet," house in the locally spoken Arabic, represented by a gable roof, present in the association's iconografy and in the collective imagination. The project reinterprets this figure by combining it with bioclimatic architecture, incorporating natural ventilation, roof overhangs, a central patio, and solar panels. It thus combines local identity, formal simplicity, and environmental performance.

The project blends harmoniously into the residential fabric of the Moursal district by incorporating local architectural forms, including the gabled metal roof. It interacts with its surroundings through simple volume, moderate heights, and a generous opening onto the street. Its bioclimatic design, central patio, and ventilated facades reinforce its integration into the landscape while enhancing local climatic conditions. Thus, it creates a respectful link between modernity, usage, the urban landscape, and the collective memory of the place.

The project incorporates a sustainable approach through bioclimatic architecture: natural ventilation, optimized orientation, a gable roof with wide overhangs, insulated cladding to limit heat, and green roofs to reduce solar impact. The walls are made of ventilated double masonry. Solar and photovoltaic panels on the roof ensure clean energy production. The central patio promotes freshness and conviviality. These strategic choices reduce energy consumption while ensuring comfort and respect for the environment.

The Bet Al Nadjah association's headquarters project stands out for its integration into the urban fabric of the Moursal neighborhood in N'Djamena and its harmonious dialogue with the built environment. It draws inspiration from local vernacular typology, particularly the symbolic form of the "Bet," meaning "house" in Arabic, expressed by a striking gable roof. This reference to collective memory reinforces its identity and visibility in the neighborhood. One of the project's strengths lies in its bioclimatic approach: the wide-overhanging roofs that can also be see in the sub saharian vernacular architecture optimize solar protection, the ventilated facades promote natural air circulation, and the central patios act as thermal regulators while providing a welcoming gathering space. The building's orientation, strategic openings, and the greening of the terraces help reduce the need for air conditioning. The project also incorporates solar energy production via rooftop photovoltaic panels, thus reducing its energy footprint. The materials chosen, such as insulated sheet metal cladding, act as a thermal barrier against extreme heat. All of these elements together make the BAN association's headquarters a building that is functional, culturally rooted, and eco-responsible.

Bio

Afrostudio is a professional structure created in 2015 founded by architect Mbogo that works for the integration of contemporary architecture in the historical, traditional, and cultural context of sub-Saharan Africa and more specifically in Chad, all while respecting the environment. The challenge is all the greater if we consider the urban realities and lack of infrastructure that characterize this part of the world. In an innovative architectural approach that considers all aspects of the project we seek to create sustainable built spaces that reflect our ambition as an African urban space. Our activity and know-how have led us to surround ourselves with multiple skills adapted to the projects according to their specificities. Our collective ambition is to share our experience with diversified project owners, public and private.
